hi....now that krock is switching to talk in the new year...would anyone like to take a guess at which station might continue with the krock format?

I don't think any station will.

Some possibilities:

WPLJ, but they have good revenue.
WNEW, but they are in the middle of battle with KTU.
WAXQ, but why tweak a successful classic rock format? Stupid move if that happend.
Maybe WKTU will give up on dance and let WNEW take the crown, but the chance of that happening is next to zero.

So, there really isn't a station I see picking up KRock's format. History also shows that this format didn't work out. Q1043 has established itself, anyone trying to go after Q (like KRock was doing kind of) will likely fail miserably and obviously Alternative didn't work out.

I don't see a station, at least in the near future, picking up where KRock left.

perhaps someone will pick up the signal for Long island's "low power" wonder, Radio X; the programming is amazingly great, and the station has already stablished a devoted loyal base of listeners in the younger demos that advertisers get horny over.

It would probably be pointless to comment that "get horny over" in reference to the $22 billion dollar radio advertising market is inappropriate and childish.

In any case, advertisers, mostly, look for 25-54, followed by 18-49 followed by some subset of either, followed by 18-34. Radio X is in the young end, and is not where the sweet spot for ad buys are.

But then again, so much of RADIO is inappropriate and childish, David! :)

{disclosure}I'm involved with RadioX{/disclosure} so I'm not unbiased on this project - but the format hole on Long Island was large, the audience is much broader than anyone thought and the station is not concerned with agency buys at this time anyway as local advertisers flocking to the station.

I did not mean to dis RadioX, but only to put buying into perspective for our pre-teen potty-mouthed poster. The RadioX project should be recognized as being quite innovative (including a cool web page with tons of branding) and an idea of what non-corporate, outa´da box thinking can do.

Re: Radio X in NYC!

Thank you, David. Coming from you that is high praise. I have cut and pasted this thread for the guys and gals who are making RadioX happen.

You didn't just say "advertisers" did you? You must mean "underwriters".

Yeah, it's almost the same thing today but........ :)

Are they jockless on that station? I live in Manhattan so I cant hear them and their site doesnt seem to make reference to any airstaff.

Yes, underwriters and/or supporters. Most of my clients are commerical and I don't always think in non-comm terms.

They have been adding things on the air...there's a new indie music show hosted by someone called "The J" and a Blues show on Sunday nights. I hear Scotty Hart off and on and other people, too.

Why do X when you can give them Jack FM?
I don't get it?

But then, I'm not a paid radio consultant either...

Immediately noone. Though out of all the missing formats it probably has the highest probability of some sort of return. Where? I couldnt even begin to fathom that one. Many people here think Alternative wont ever work in NYC period. I disagree. Howard aside, I think K-Rock dropped the ball. I remember when it started. It was an enjoyale station then. Over time things changed (it feels like some people got lazy with it) and it just didnt seem to work. IF it were done correctly, I think it could work rather well in NY. The question is, who wants to take that chance? Probably noone.

Simple, RadioX is edgy/new/exciting and fills a hole left wide open by the three dinosaur classic rockers (WAXQ/WRCN/WBAB) and the death of WLIR (which once upon a time, legend has it, played modern rock).

Plus there is a licensed JACK-FM in the nearby #1 market. :p

Blues show? so ar ethey trying top replicate Indie 103 LA? I mean that idea?

FREE FM SUCKS, Rock will not return (bottom line)

NYC will soon be the largest market that's missing so much crap that you'll need two hands. At least Z100 is still incredibly healthy and one of the best Top 40's in the country.

I am a Van Halen fan, all in the DLR days, so I don't wish malice for his show.
However, touting the egomaniacal singer of a rock band on life support as the genesis of a new talk format is hardly what I would call a station for advertisers to salivate over.

Why the hell launch FREE FM in every ****ing city? Radio is not Starbucks. There's a difference between syndicating a single show and syndicating an entire radio sation--it works in limited doses and has been done before.

I doubt, however, than the new FREE will come close to grossing what K Rock was making, even with their after-Howard shortfalls.
Maybe I'm dead wrong and this will be a winner for CBS/Infinity. I don't buy it.

As for rock in NYC, I'm afraid death is imminent. Classic rock does pretty well here, but alt. and active have tanked. It's not about how the format was programmed or how young/old the jocks were. K Rock was one of the country's most lauded and known alternative rock stations. People in other markets have wished to God they had K Rock in their markets.
It was the NYC version of KROQ and made a fantastic stab at serving this market's new rock and 90's rock/hard rock needs.
The problem is, there's not much need. A format will wither if the audience isn't there, no matter how good the programming is.

Not enough rock audience for K Rock = new format. Not rocket science.
I don't see any station dropping its format to try and establish itself as the "new" rocker.
You can't get much more established than K Rock.

Pay attention to Radio X

The imminent success of Radio X will serve as a proto type in the days to come for real rock stations when it comes to programming .NYC needs some of this!

And yet, still no JACK in Lubbock, what's the deal CJ?
