Next Year, it'll be Ryan Seacrest's Rockin' New Years Eve 2013

Yep, we needed some fresh blood out there, so I think Seacrest IS the right guy for the job. After 40 years, I think Dick Clark is ready to step down, and carry the torch over to Seacrest. Seacrest can handle everything all by himself now. So, I think the tradition has been started over by Guy Lombardo, then over to Dick Clark, and it is now passed over to Seacrest, who will eventually try to keep it alive as possible...

Hasn't it been Ryan Seacrest's Rockin' New Years Eve for several years now since Dick Clark's stroke? Dick's time on the show has been limited to about 10 minutes each year anyways so basically it's been Ryan's show since then. And it has changed a lot since Seacrest took over and never will be the same show that Dick Clark hosted for many years featuring artists from all genres not unlike Seacrest who has Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber every year and a bunch of B and C-listers doing the cut-ins.

Dick Clark should have retired several years ago. With each passing year he continues to ruin his legacy by doing these shows with his poor health.

Wait, is this official news or speculation?

I think Dick Clark's production company owns the trademark to Rockin' New Years Eve, and I think they want to keep the "brand name" on the program, so it might take a while.

I think I heard that Dick wants to keep doing as long as he can, and he might not have too many years left on him. So it's bound to happen in a few years for sure. Ryan Seacrest is the Dick Clark of this generation so it would only be fair.

It's been Ryan Seacrest's baby--primary hosting AND executive production--since 2005. It's more likely that Dick Clark's appearances are through continued insistence by Seacrest himself than anyone at ABC or Dick Clark Productions, a company that has actually been owned by Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder since 2007.

(I choose to look at it as Seacrest's nod to a media predecessor mostly out of disbelief that Daniel Snyder himself is that charitable or patient with anyone about anything. Do a search for any Dave McKenna column or Washington City Paper article to understand why.)

Maybe Dick Clark will hand over the reins to Ryan Seacrest and then in a year, He'll take it back and send Seacrest over to TBS!!! ;D

And as usual, KATV Little Rock AR will be tape delaying the 10:35PM CT show an hour.

As will many other stations outside of Eastern Time -- delaying it to 11:35PM local time.

What happens to the show if Seacrest indeed does end up at the Today show like those inane rumors from early in the month suggest? Or like we discussed earlier in the year when the rumors he wanted to buy out VH1 Soul for his own network, NBC decides to give him one of their dead weight channels like Sleuth, Style, UHD or ShopNBC as his new plaything? Unless DCP jumps over to NBC (and judging from the feud between DCP and the HFPA regarding the Golden Globes, that doesn't look likely), there would be no way ABC would allow a competitor on their network. Does this mean because Fergie is the LA host it becomes "Fergie's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" as she's technically third in line?

I don't think Ryan Seacrest is restricted to a particular network -- for one, he still does "American Idol" for Fox while he does New Year's Eve for ABC.

In the case of Dick Clark, in 1973-1974, he continued doing Bandstand for ABC while he hosted The $10,000 Pyramid for CBS; and one time in the mid-1980s, hosted three series on three different networks simultaneously -- $25,000 Pyramid on CBS, Bandstand on ABC and Bloopers on NBC.

KMBC in Kansas City has done this for years, probably will again this year. How many places outside the Eastern time zone delay it to match their time? Does anyone pre-empt it with their own local countdown? KCTV used to do a live show

IN Chicago, WLS-TV has it live from 10:35 - 11:08, then switches to the local New Years countdown they host themselves. Sometime after midnight, WLS-TV then goes back to airing Rockin' New Years, though on tape delay.

Why don't they just add the Chicago countdown to the national show?

All true, but should the day come if he's part of a news program (at least as a technical matter) in a leading presenter role, it could be a different story. But we're not there yet, and the lawyers will see to it such questions are resolved.

Dick Clark had on more makeup than Tammy Faye tonight. There comes a time when it's
best to just pause and let go.

Reminds me of the sitcoms that should have ended after 5 or 6 years, but are now tainted
by the awful seasons 7, 8, 9 they cranked out.

I agree. Central time gets shorted by the national New Year's Eve shows. At least in Alabama you could watch the Moon Pie Drop from Mobile.

This is not an official announcement, despite the very misleading title of the thread.

That said, it's time for Dick Clark to bow out. He clearly is in better shape than most 80+ year olds who have had strokes, but he's just not up to being a broadcaster anymore. I'm sure he's actively involved in the planning of the show, but he should stay off the air from here on out. Let Ryan Seacrest have the title and the show. He's very good at it. ABC is very lucky to have found a solid replacement for Clark.
