NFL agrees to terms with broadcast partners through 2022

Unless OTA goes away and the networks become pay-TV, this is a surprise to me....I thought that the NFL would go cable/sat/pay by then! But I am not complaining!

Could this be a make or break deal for them? If the Cable takeover and the network erosion
continues to 2022.........sounds like these games may be all they can afford to air in 2022.

All football all the time. Don't worry if you miss Sunday's game, we'll show it again on
Monday, Wednesday, Friday........because that's all we got.

To me the big winner was NBC.

Considering how their primetime has been the last 7 years, this was a huge win to keep the NFL.

Not to mention they pay less of a right fee than both CBS and FOX which has to pay $1 Billion a year.

And they get to add a primetime Thanksgiving game; possibly to replace NFL Network so they can get the most viewers; as well as airing a Divisional Playoff

game; which means ESPN may air a Wild Card Playoff game.

And of course, NFL Network is suppose to increase it's Thursday Night Package to accomadate the loss of the Thanksgiving game, or someone else might pick up
some games ; although it's yet to be determined how many.

Overall, this is a good package all together.

Good idea for the NFL to grant NBC the "English and Spanish" rights to the Sunday night broadcast. This way, NBC is able to place SNF en Espanol on their still-struggling Telemundo network. They get a good programming draw on an otherwise moribund evening for Telemundo while the NFL gets exposure among 1st and 2nd generation Latinos. Win-win there.

I so hope the NFL sticks with the exact amount of regular season games and post season games they have now. And their distribution through the season to me is perfect. A Thursday game, Sundays, and Monday night. Am a little nostalgic for MNF on ABC, but with cable and satellite it really doesn't matter anymore. All the other leagues should take a look at the NFL and make changes accordingly. NFL has basically a six month season (one month preseason, 4 months regular, one month playoff.) NBA, MLB, even NASCAR, why not that model for you?

Don't forget the NHL and I would like to see NBCSP,Fox Sports Net,CBS Sports Network,NFL Network and ESPN/ABC in the Super Bowl rotation.

Fewer people have access to programming from the NBC Sports Network, FOX Sports Net, the CBS Sports Network, and the NFL Network. If ABC had a sports division of their own rather than ESPN to present sports, it would be great for ABC to present a Super Bowl again.

But ABC can use ESPN people.
Lots of people don't get TBS or TNT for the Playoffs.

A vast majority of Americans (like 80-90% depending on the market) do get TBS and TNT since they are on basic cable/satellite. The smaller/specialized channels (NBC Sports, CBS Sports, NFL Network, etc.) may or may not be on basic cable, or they may be on an extra-cost sports tier. Their audiences are much smaller.

And, yes, ESPN can put content on ABC, but ABC and its affiliates don't get $5 per subscriber, so the contracts usually require most games to be on ESPN. Prime-time college football, Sunday afternoon NBA, and a few other sports are allowed on the broadcast network, but it's not in the interest of The Mickey Mouse Outfit to emphasize sports on ABC in most cases.

So MLB Playoffs should not be on TBS but CBS and FOX,NHL Playoffs on NBCSP but NBC and NBA Playoffs on TNT but CBS and ABC,WNBA Playoffs not on ESPN but on ABC.

Wouldn't WNBA playoffs be better served on Lifetime? <ducking tomatoes>
