NFL Draft coverage a no show on Falcon flagship station

F

Freebird Fantasia

Great job by DAVE FM for not having one minute of programming about the NFL draft this weekend. I mean they are only the home of the Atlanta Falcons. No need for any draft coverage I guess.

What a joke.

Fantasia, Did you actually listen to 92.9 before posting this? I heard multiple mentions per hour during the day. They even seemed to have sold sponsorships to their Draft Day Coverage. They had a crew at Branch, Sully in the studio manning the phones and staff at the Fan Headquarters at the Fox Sports Grill getting player interviews. I even heard a Draft Day Recap show on the air this afternoon (Sunday).

I thought they did a great job with their coverage.

... and besides, music matters there. I don't really understand what they're doing with the Falcons anyway. It's a complete misfit. Why don't they just give them away?

790 The Zone did have live coverage. Perhaps DAVE had an "update" once in a while but I tuned in several times both Saturday and Sunday and music was always playing (and crappy music at that).

Why is this station the flagship for the Falcons? If you aren't doing to go better than this, then please give it up. We have two full-time sports station in Atlanta, either of which would do a much better job.

.........neither of which has a signal worth a damn. While either sports station would be a better fit, until one moves to an FM signal or WSB cuts a check to Arthur Blank, it's not going to happen.

Dave did quite a bit of draft day coverage this weekend. I know this since I was in the studio last night when we had our draft coverage show and others in this post heard Saturday's coverage with Sully and Orff. If you're going to attempt slamming a radio station at least have your facts straight. ;) ;D

All I know is I tuned in several times Saturday and Sunday and there was nothing about the Falcons or the draft. Just bad music playing on a computerized loop.

Nice research, Freebird.

I heard the coverage both days as well....

And, for those of you that obviously know everything that is going on, it's the FM signal that the Falcons were looking for for the purposes of coverage. So, since some people here seem to have all the answers: What frequency should the Falcons broadcast from if that are looking for the benefits of an FM signal? Or would you find a reason to blast any station, no matter who they decided to go with? Why do I have a gut feeling that the latter would be correct? Hmmmmmmm....

WSB, 680 The Fan, 790 The Zone and even our friends at WGST would be a better fit as the flagship station. Most NFL teams have AM flagship stations.

I bet not one employee at Dave FM could diagram a football play or break down a 3-4 defense or tell me what a "40" scheme is.

I'll take that bet. $1000 right now. You put up the cash, we'll call Sully...then...you'll send me the cash via PayPal.

Of the 32 teams in the NFL:
9 have FM's as sole flagships
13 have AM's as sole flagships
10 have AM/FM partners as flagships

That's 19 of 32 with FM stations having flagship status.

Doesn't Freebird ever get tired of being right?

Also, Atlanta is a bit of an anomoly because of the nature of the market. There are no other major markets oven close to us. And since we are the #1 urban sprawl city in America, there is literally a massive amount of georgraphy necessary to cover if you want a game broadcast to reach everyone in what we consider the "Metro" area. Wiith an FM signal you get a very wide broadcast area, all the way down to Macon on a good day, up into Athens, Cartersville, etc. What the Falcons were shooting for was that clear signal coverage. No AM's stretch that far. So, I'll pose the questions again which Freebird neglected to answer. If the Falcons want an FM signal for the sake of reach and clarity, who would you suggest they partner with?

The Falcons realized that Z-93 was not going to be the place for the sports junkies. That is why 790 the Zone is their official Sports Talk station. Dimino was did his show live from their hq's every Monday morning. and they had plenty5 of sports coverage. I don;t think it was necessary for Dave to do live wall-to-wall coverage of the draft. The Falcons must be on a FM signal. I can care less which onme just tell me and I will tune in.

Driving home from a falcons game it always seemed to me that hardly anyone would call into Dave but it always seemed the Zone was jammed with calls.

It's not that there aren't any calls. There's only so many angry Falcon fans you can put on the air before it becomes redundant. ;)

Sully has a great sports background. He did sports at WGST for a while too and some highschool play by play. When it came time to listen for draft coverage I never even thought about 92.9 as an option. When people think sports in the ATL I don't think Dave-FM pops in their head. Certainly the station is not branded that way.

What is really messed up.. the Gwinnett Gladiators hockey games are broadcast on a AM Station in Gainseville. Is there a soul in Gainseville who cares about hockey in Gwinnett County?! lol Not to mention the poor coverage at the Area at Gwinnett Center. One can not listen to a game on the radio if they are actually at the game.

Think Paula philips could quit saying "Maaarta geooo potroool-elo." I heard her do traffic in Gainseville too.. there was a ladder in the road.. I swear that was the biggest traffic snafu since the 3 car wreck of 75'.
If you get a chance to look, there is a body under that tarp. Can I plz hear "body bag" in a traffic report tomorrow. ???
