NFL Network Airs Nude Players During Locker Room Interview

Around 6:55 last night, NFL Network was airing a post-game interview from the Cincinnati Bengals locker room after their 34-21 win over the Buffalo Bills. As cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones was being interviewed, many of his teammates in the background were in several stages of undress. It is a locker room after all. But it took a good minute for the control room to notice.

“Wowie, zowie, what an interview,” said the in-studio hosts. “That was interesting…”

Why does anybody do locker room interviews? You're shoving mikes in front of tired, mentally exhausted guys and then expecting them to give you anything of use (which they never do). Meanwhile you've got naked guys swearing up a storm in the background. Just ban them altogether.

I remember actually doing interviews with players in the showers. No kidding. If you want to get the truth from someone, get them naked. That's what my girlfriend says.

I've never understood why reporters insist on doing interviews in the locker room. The last thing I want to do after a game is to be bothered by nosey reporters waving microphones and cameras in my face while I'm trying to shower or change clothes. Locker rooms, bathrooms etc should be off limits to everyone except the players. Don't get me started about the woman reporter several years ago that raised hell about not being allowed inside. When they finally did relent. She saw a naked man and then complained about it. Well, If you don't want to see a naked man, stay out of the showers. Do it in the hall or go to a meeting room to do your reporting.

It goes back to the print days, before microphones and cameras. When mics and cameras came along, it was an issue of fairness. If the newspapers can go there, why can't we? They have press conferences now, but they're more formal affairs that are controlled by the teams and the league. No exclusivity. The locker rooms are open season. So if you want an exclusive one-on-one, that's one place to do it. Another is during pre-game workouts. But very little is off limits any more. The networks get to interview the coaches and players DURING the game. That used to be off limits. Not any more. There ARE parts of the locker rooms that are off limits. Training room is off limits. The showers are off limits. There is supposed to be a drying room outside the showers where the players can dry off before the enter the locker area. So there is some thought given to this. But some things happen by accident. That's what apparently happened here. BTW you CAN'T interview players in the hallway or outside the locker room without advance permission. If you attempt, they will stop you.

I'm surprised somebody didn't mention that this wasn't on broadcast TV! Boy would the PTC or some other watchdog group have a fit then!

Another thing to note as originally posted this was on the NFL Network. If any reporter has a right to be in an NFL locker room, it would be the 'media' owned by the NFL.

There is nothing I hate more than interviews of sports players, anywhere. It's always the same old questions and the same old responses.

"we did our best"...."they're a very good team, have to give them that"..."we'll be back out there tomorrow night"...blah blah blah
