NFL Network to carry some regular-season games

> Story from Rocky Mountain News (pops)

> Oh, great. My cable doesn't carry NFL Network.

So Dallas is going to play Thanksgiving NIGHT now? Wow, there's a break from tradition. So we get 3 NFL games this year on Turkey Day? Looks like the 20th anniversary of the Flutie game (Miami/BC) is going to go up against the NFL.

OK Time Warner Cable, get up off your ass and get the NFL Network. My cable doesn't either. That's what I have in my apt here in Charlotte. At least I will get to see the Thanksgiving game on NFL network at my parents' house or my grandma's house.
>

EDIT: It will have actually been 22 years, not 20, since the Flutie game. And after reading the other posts I guess it's not likely TWC will be getting the NFL Network. Thank goodness for bars...that'll take care of it.

First it was about money. Now its about money and control.

Even Bright House in much of Tampa, Florida (NFL Market) doesnt have the NFL Network, and has made no indications they ll get it before 2007.

As far as commentary, don't look for anything controversial to come out of the mouths of the Nfl check-chasing puppets that will man the microphones.

Admittedly, maybe I wouldn't be so down on this deal if I could afford even basic cable.....or digital cable was even available in my neighborhood.....or if satellite reception were tolerable.

The NFL has long been my favorite sport. I talked about this with others back when ESPN first got into the picture, taking the NFL off over the air TV for the first time in league history. People said it was "good for the sport".

Perhaps. But is it good for the fans?

And does the league really care?

Now if the NFL really wanted to play hardball, they would've exempted the rule about local broadcast stations in the markets of the teams playing for this contract, and then aired games of teams that currently don't have NFL network in their home market. Such as Tampa. I believe time warner was one of the able companies that said they won't add NFL network until the NFL allows them to have NFL sunday ticket. Anyway, if the only channel in town broadcasting the game is the NFL network, these cable companies would be under too much pressure to add these channels.

You're right, expect the subscription rates to increase dramatically within the next year when NFL reserves the right to air its games on its network. Or if the satellite TV providers want to keep their prices lower, they should make the NFL network a premium subscription channel, just like NBA TV.

btw, I have Dish Network and the NFL Network is on the AT120(which I currently have).

Time Warner has been clear about this Sunday ticket and NFL Network issue, and they're sticking to their word. "You want us to carry NFL Network? Give us Sunday Ticket First!"

In the other hand, Comcast has it and offers it on some digital packages (inclding their digital Spanish programming tier in many markets sharing space with SuperCanal, FOX Sports En Espanñol, Gol TV and WAPA America among others)and will use this as a token to get Sunday Ticket, and I can bet you they will pull it out if they don't get it.

Now, if the NFL decides to do what you suggested, they couold be facing lawsuits from CBS, FOX, ESPN, and NBC for breach of contract. They get priority to carry the regional games. The only thing NFL network can do is carry a game or two from out of market teams, and it could be to the cable companies to decide which game to carry.

> Oh, great. My cable doesn't carry NFL Network.

This hasn't been officially announced by the NFL but it is surfacing now on ESPN.com. These games were not part of the regular-season contract that CBS and Fox got - it's a separate deal so the league can award them to anyone they want

Personally, if this is true, then they are making a big mistake since many cable companies don't (and won't) carry the NFL Network and others (like Cox in Phoenix) have it on Digital Cable only. That's an extreme loss of viewership for those 8 games outside of the participating teams' home markets (although the blackout rule still applies, I believe).

But if part of the problem with some cable companies is that they want NFL Sunday Ticket before they'll take the NFL Network, then they have to wait 4 more years. DirecTV has the exclusive contract for Sunday Ticket through (I think) the 2010 season.

Now it's official: NFL.com has the announcement

I think this is a GREAT MOVE!

The NFL network will now expand quicker than the CW.

Bottom line is this, it's about the money

The NFL Network not airing any regualr season football would

be like Vince McMahon not trying to look bad for 10 years straight.

It had to happen

I guess OLN should now ask the NHL for more games next season.

I was just thinking...will they televise a game Saturday Nov. 25 and Saturday Dec. 2? If so that could hurt college football.

Time-Warner no longer owns the main cable system in Tampa area...it is owned by Bright House Networks. And, no we don't get NFL network.

Government could get involved...

Say the NFL tried that - putting, say Green Bay on a Thursday game but not showing it in Green Bay. After the riots were put down, the politicians would get involved - remember, Green Bay voters put up the money to remodel Lambeau. Or take any other city with a tax to build a new stadium. And those games are going OFF free TV locally? The NFL tries that, it's got lawsuits aplenty, and a big turnoff of fans.

> btw, I have Dish Network and the NFL Network is on the

And they'll yank it as soon as NFL network asks for more money. Just like they did Lifetime, ESPN Classic, and TV Land (the last two were reinstated eventually).

NFL may be on the verge of a downfall..

When I heard about the idea of a late season Thursday/Saturday package, I thought it might be just a bit much. Even so, I figured that if the NFL could get a couple of hundred million for it from someone like TNT or WB, it might be worth it. Instead, they're keeping it for themselves and hoping the ratings and exposure of their new network will be enough financial benefit for the owners. They're dead wrong.

From the sounds of it, the 8 game NFL network schedule will be set before the start of the regular season and won't change. I believe NBC will have the right to pick better matchups for their Sunday night game toward the end of the season.

The NFL Network may get lucky and have some great matchups, but they could just as easily be showing a lot of 2-10 teams by that time of the year.

But really, that's not the biggest problem they face.

The NFL is under the mistaken impression that this move will lead many cable companies to suddenly decide to pick up the NFL Network. Certainly the greatest demand will come from NFL markets. However, since the local teams will be available over the air when they play on the NFL Networks games anyway, this demand will be greatly reduced. With so many NFL games available already, I just don't see these games on Thursday or Saturday generating a lot of excitement unless your team is involved. Put another way: I don't think a lot of people in Dallas are going to be burning up the phone lines to get the NFL Network added so they can see Chicago play Kansas City.

So THAT'S what the proud sponsor of the spring training home (in Clearwater) of the Philadelphia Phillies does! :)

But back on topic... I'm fortunate to have NFL Network on DirecTV even though I don't watch it much. But if it disappeared tomorrow... well, being able to watch certain games isn't central to my existance, any day of the week.

I was talking about the 7 other Thursday/Saturday telecasts (besides the one on Thanksgiving). My parents and my grandparents both get DirecTV and I will be there on Thanksgiving.

I'll wager the Thanksgiving night game will be the only one for that week and then there will be a game Thursday, Nov. 30 but not Saturday, Dec. 2.

It's an eight-game package, right? If the 2006 season ends Jan. 7, 2007, you'd have games on Nov. 23 and 30, Dec. 9, 16, 23 and 30 and Jan. 6. So on one of those weeks there would have to be two broadcasts -- Thursday and Saturday (Maybe Dec. 7 and 9 to transition to the Saturday broadcasts?).

I'm guessing the tradition Detroit and Dallas games stay in their current time slots (11:30 and 3 in the Central Time Zone) and the NFL Net's game is a rotating game each season.
