NFL nixes Indy church's SB party

When did the NFL Become a government body able to tell us what we can and cannot do? That's an absolute outrage. Big thumbs down.

When their lawyers remembered their Trademark Law 101 course in law school. If they don't protect their trademark, they can lose it. That's why they only allow the use of the Super Bowl name if one is a "partner" (read: you have to pay for the rights). Everyone else has to use "The Big Game in Miami" or something similar. Even bars aren't allowed to advertise the fact that they're carrying the Super Bowl by its name. News organizations and sports-talk shows are exceptions AFAIK.

While that has nothing directly to do with this particular case, the NFL probably feels that since they (the league and its team owners) own the game, they have the right to tell anyone how it can be displayed outside of the privacy of one's own home. I've heard movie studios have similar rules when it comes to public performances of their products on large screens.

One would think that the NFL would have bigger things to worry about..steroids, selfish players, players running afoul of the law. I sent the pastor of the church an e-mail expressing my support for them.

Well if the NFL can run rimshot over everyone with their "Super Bowl" why doesn't everyone else do it? I don't see the Rose Bowl protecting itself in this fashion. What about Disney with its trademarks that they do not protect in the same nit picky fashion? If the NFL can do this than I should be sued for singing "Happy Birthday To You" to my Mother. without paying the estate of the woman who wrote that song. But guess what? You don't hear that song at restaurants but you hear bands in bars all across America doing the song without paying the estate and they aren't getting in trouble?

Just imagine if New Orleans was in this game instead of the Bears. that money would probably be going for Katrina relief. Are you willing to bet the NFL would be shutting them down then?

The NFL just lost my dollar. I won't be buying their licensed products and I'll be trashing the ones I already have. Yes the NFL has the right to defend their copyright but not allowing me to even let the words "Super Bowl" cross my lips with the thread of lawsuit, and not allowing me to watch the game on a TV bigger than 55 inches is going way too far thank you very much.
