NFL ON CW?

Some of this is that some of the Nexstar owned stations do air preseason NFL games under local branding like this KRON 4 San Francisco airs Raiders Pre-season games from Las Vegas. Yes some of that has to be a carryover when the Raiders were in Oakland. But in this case its about the national TV rights to the NFL for CW and Nexstar. Not sure where they are going for now given that Nexstar has affiliations with the big 4 in some parts of the country.

so there's nothing stopping local stations from airing preseason games from out of market teams?

Simply put: No. There isn't an NFL package scheduled to be out for bid until 2033.
The current NHL TV deals expire after the 2027-28 season. Perhaps The CW might go after part of that?

Nope. Teams can set up preseason ad-hoc networks with affiliates all over the country if stations are interested.

Here in Texas both the Cowboys and Texans preseason games air in most markets in the region. However both teams have a handshake agreement not to air those games in each other’s true home market. No Cowboy preseason games in Houston and no Texans in DFW.

Given the massive haul the NBA got for its new package, the NFL has begin pushing its providers to re-up in the short-term. The current packages run through 2033, but the NFL has an opt-out in 2029. In exchange for removing the 2029 opt-out, the league is basically looking for a 50%+ bump in fees from its partners now and letting the updated contract with the increased fees run all the way to 2033. First up is CBS since the Ellison purchase triggers a re-negotiation clause.

It seems doubtful Nexstar would have the money to pay what the NFL will want for either the Fox or CBS package to move those games to the CW. I also doubt they would outbid the streamers for their packages.

Nope. Someone has $$ they can buy the preseason rights. Alaska usually shows 5 or 6 preseason teams that they bought the rights do. Hawaii has had stations buy the rights to 9 or 10 teams in a season.

NFL teams have a lot of flexibility to cut their own deals with TV stations to air preseason games. For radio, they just stick to the regular local affiliates, as they control the in-season rights for those anyway. Some local televised games are even picked up by NFL Network, though they might air on a delayed basis.

All the preseason home broadcasts are aired on a delayed basis on NFL Network, although some are also aired live, usually two or three per week. They used to air the home team's broadcast in the first half and the road team's in the second half, but that stopped several years ago.

They have a full week to air all the games.

I doubt CW is getting the NFL for now but in some places where nexstar owns the big 4 they have to get NFL rights from the networks they are affiliated with as in Nexstar owned station KTXL Sacramento having to get their NFL content from Fox Sports or KXTV Sacramento via whenever ABC airs Monday Night Football from ESPN.

The closest we can come up with on Nexstar airing football without the big 4 is WPIX getting preseason rights to the Giants or Jets or KTLA getting preseason games from the Rams and Chargers. Not sure how this will go from there.
