NFL Playoff Games to be Blacked Out?

Apparently ticket sales have been sluggish in Phoenix and Minneapolis/St. Paul. As of yesterday, 5600 tickets were still available for Saturday afternoon's Falcons-Cardinals game and KPNX-TV isn't inclined to buy up the remaining tickets. I'm sure either NBC or the NFL will have something to say about that. The deadline was extended to 2:30 PM MST today.

The Vikings have an even bigger problem. As of yesterday morning, 11,000 tickets were unsold. The Vikings have an extra day to sell out since their game is on Sunday. Will Fox buy up the remainder of the tickets?

If they don't, these games will be unavailable to viewers in most of Arizona and Minnesota, respectively. Blackout rules apply to playoff games as well as those in the regular season.

I'm kinda shocked about Minnesota, with their history of success (albeit with no Super Bowls, but a winning history nonetheless), and one of the most exciting players in the NFL in Adrian Peterson, they shouldn't have a problem selling out home playoff games. And, if I remember correctly, the last Viking home game versus the New York Giants this past weekend, looked to be a sellout. It may have something to do with the economy, who knows. I'm checking their website, and they say that the remaining ticket prices are starting at $30 each, especially for playoff time, that's plenty affordable. I do know (as with any other major sport), tickets prices do rise once the playoffs hit, and do steadily rise once the teams advance further in the playoffs.

The NFL gave the Cards a break. They now have another 24 hours (until 2:30 tomorrow) to sell the remaining 3700 tickets. With that relatively small number of tickets remaining, if the game isn't on TV in Arizona, Gannett only has themselves to blame, unless of course they don't really care about carrying the game to begin with.

Does anyone know when was the last NFL playoff game to be blacked out on TV in its home market?

Miami's last home playoff game (against Baltimore, no less!) was blacked out. Thankfully, Sunday's will be a complete sellout. GO DOLPHINS!

KPNX's Atlanta sister, WXIA, is the official TV station of the Atlanta Falcons. They will be carrying the game as well. WXIA had been promoting deals that would allow Falcons fans to travel to Phoenix to see the game in person.

I don't know who the official TV station for the Cardinals is. If the game were played in Atlanta, I am sure WXIA would step up somehow.

BTW: The game did sell out.

As of this post time, there are still 3,000 tickets left for the Vikings to sell before tomorrow's 4:30 EST deadline.
