NFL question

How come ESPN Classic & the NFL Network won't have classic televised games of NFL Broadcasts? I know ESPN & NFL Films produces a program called NFL's Greatest Games, which have the NFL films footage & the radio broadcasts itself, & I think the NFL Network will also have a matchup of the previous week's game during the regular season & beyond. I know ESPN classic has rebroadcasts of classic NBA, Major League Baseball games, NHL, NCAA football & basketball, but not taped play by play telecasts of classic NFL games (including individual games, playoffs, Super Bowl, etc.) from the past. Let us know what you think. Thank you.

The NFL prefers that its NFL Films footage be used as much as possible, so the original network video is usually(but not always) set aside. There have been some occasional exceptions, as when NBC dug up its tape of the 'Immaculate Reception', and a peviously 'lost' tape of Super Bowl III.
Many game tapes from the '70s and earlier are lost because the networks didn't save such program until about 30 years ago.

One of the most burning questions in my life, to be sure. Even though the networks have the footage, the NFL feels the film version creates more drama than video tape, which, because of the technology (or lack there of) at the time, doesnt creat that "drama" the league wants.

There is exisiting video taped footage of both Super Bowl I and the 1967 Ice Bowl...and espn knows it...has it..and has aired it..as part of their 75th NFL anniversary a few years back.

Look for NBC to give us a taste of their footage when they return this fall with their Sunday Night Football. "Monday Night Football" and ESPNABC have often used videotape footage of their games.

I suppose they don't want to alienate the fans of grainy 16-millimeter film footage, boisterous backgrtound music, extreme close-ups of steam rising from players' heads, and those slo-mo action shots...not to mention the narration of Harry Kalas and the laye John Facenda.
But haven't we seen it all before?
Besides, the current NFL Films compilation stuff on ESPN has too much Steve Sabol for my liking!;-)
I hope NBC will use some 'retro' game footage this season. Since Costas made a name for himself partly due to the NFL Insert Year Here pregame, and John Madden won his only Super Bowl (XI) on NBC, I'm sure we'll see a brief glimpses of them from 'back in the day' when NBC starts its coverage.

...I believe one other aspect playing into this situation is that, although Howard Cosell's boxing and baseball commentary pops up occasionally on ESPN Classic, Howard's daughters have denied the NFL Network the rights to use his commentary on any Monday Night Football repeats...
