NFL Team Markets (CBS 'AFC' and FOX 'NFC' )

With the recently Fox Television Stations Group purchase WJZY/WMYT Charlotte, NC. Since Charlotte has a NFL-NFC Team (Carolina Panthers). Will CBS or FOX purchase more TV stations in the future to secure AFC/NFC markets?

With FOX and CBS don't have an O&O present in certain markets, will they both try to buy the affiliation for these NFL markets? I could see FOX is trying to get O&O markets in San Francisco, and Seattle. I don't know if FOX will buy back KTVI FOX 2 St. Louis, or FOX 8 in New Orleans.

I'm confused as to why it matters if a CBS affiliate is owned by them or by someone else.
 
The only reason I could see a network buying a TV station is to get a better signal. Or to protect itself from getting a lesser signal. Obviously FOX did this and CBS got the worst of it.

But now with digital TV, it seems less obvious what is good or not. Plus digital TV is still kind of up in the air with repacking of spectrum.

Disney has never been aggressive about buying TV stations and NBC is similar.
 
Doesn't the NFC cover the big markets and biggest name teams like the Cowboys and Packers while most of the AFC teams are in smaller markets? Maybe that's why CBS isn't so aggressive in buying stations unlike Fox. I could so Fox getting KCPQ (and sister KZJO). Fox is really interested in duopolies, that's why it sold the St. Louis station in addition to STL being a bigger baseball than football town Rams going to back to LA if the Chargers of Raiders don't beat them there
 
Funny how, with the exception of the Billikens, the teams in both Eastern divisions are all in O&O markets.

Probably because, with the exception of my beloved Bills, those markets are also among the most populous markets in the country. Market population is also the key to why Fox has more O&Os in NFC cities than CBS does in AFC cities, and why CBS will likely never pursue O&Os in its football markets.

They tried that back in the early '90s when they bought WCCO radio and TV in the Twin Cities, and WFRV-TV Green Bay/WJMN-TV Escanaba MI. Then they lost the NFC to Fox a year or two later.
