NFL To FCC: Don't Tinker With Our Blackout Rule

The NFL is so steadfast on their blackout rule, they won't even allow a loophole to let viewers watch even televised games on stations affected by retransmission squabbles with cable/satellite carriers.

So the blackout of the Syracuse DMA with home Bills games will still stand? (LOL) A tiny strip of land in western Yates County, NY causes that to happen. Strange, huh?

Oakland Raiders is pushing this Blackout rule the most. Was there ever a blackout rule when the Raiders was in LA? Like the LA stations would go to the LA Rams, San Francisco 49ers and SD Chargers when they can't get LA Raiders to air on Socal TV? Look at San Francisco We can't air Raiders games when they are at the Oakland Colluseum so the games that air on KPIX 5 goes to San Diego Chargers.

Only if they were sold out 72 hours in advance, like any other NFL game. The deadline would have been 6 PM Pacific time Friday for a MNF game on ABC.

I'm sure the NCAA, NAIA, UFL, CFL, and countless high school football teams would have no problem with the NFL disappearing for a year. ;D

The question I have is would the CFL reschedule their games to Sundays at 1 & 4pm Eastern time so CBS & FOX would have CFL games to fill the time slots. I'm sure many Americans wouldn't mind the minor differences and enjoy.

And, no blackouts.

Here in Illinois (with a few minor exceptions for the likes of tournaments), I've always thought Sunday high school sports were prohibited (but that doesn't stop all the youth leagues from playing on Sundays).

However, I also wonder--if the 2011 NFL season is wiped out--could CBS decide to start their college basketball coverage before Thanksgiving (college hoops usually begin the second weekend in November) and air at least one Sunday college hoops game in place of the NFL?

And next Thanksgiving if there's no NFL, since Ole Miss and Mississippi State play their "Egg Bowl" football game on Turkey Day, could we see CBS try to pick up that game for additional SEC on CBS coverage, and perhaps move the game to the day (IIRC that game aired Thanksgiving evenings on ESPN).

That said, I do see NBC trying to make up its losses (Which will be HUGE since I believe they have the Super Bowl this year) by airing NHL games on Sunday Nights in case there is no SNF (It would come complete with a customized Hockey Night In America studio show too). Heck, NBC might even be able to get exclusivity on the games they air on Sunday Nights too just like do now

If I was in Congress, I'd introduce a bill that says they have to eliminate it if the game is played in a taxpayer-funded stadium.
