NFL Trying To Lure Cablevision To Add NFLN Via Binding Arbitration

Cablevision's multiple requests for Fox to submit to binding arbitration in an attempt to end their blackout with the cable operator has grabbed the attention of a higher-up at the NFL Network, who in a letter to Cablevision, writes: "I’m encouraged to hear that Cablevision supports binding arbitration and would recommend that approach in our own discussions with you for carriage of NFL Network."

Gotta give them credit for trying to capitalize on an opportunity. Of course, with my luck, now with me recently switching to another carrier, Cablevision will finally get around to adding NFL Network. (FML, lol...)

The NFL Network will be useless next season when the lockout occurs.
Cablevision should tell the No Fun League to go fly a kite.

I have no stake in this battle, I'm just calling it as I see it.

NFL's got nothing but chutzpah here. If they ran a broadcast channel, they could make the argument - they don't.

Of course, the first outlet to run with this tidbit was the NY Post, without any disclaimer...

NFL Network is basically useless with the exception of a few Thursday night games toward the end of the season. Just like the MLB and NBA networks, most of the programming is just filler and repeats over and over.

I noticed that they've made a slight alteration of their Thursday night coverage. It used to start on Thanksgiving night, with one game for the next few weeks with additional Saturday games rounding out their eight games per year. Now it will be for seven weeks on Thursdays starting in a couple of weeks plus one Saturday game (Dallas vs. Arizona on Christmas night). I'm sure NFLN would love to have Thursday nigth football every week. In case you haven't noticed, ever since 2002, the first game of the season is now played (or "kicked off") on Thursday. So we're pretty much got Thursday games on half of the season at the moment. But it wouldn't faze me if we saw more Thursday games in September and October in the future... Hey, how about Wednesday night games? Think outside the box... ::)

Fridays and Saturdays before the second week in December are no-nos for the NFL (I think that was written into federal law when they got the anti-trust exemption for national TV back in the '60s). The other five days are OK.

It also has a lot to do with many high school football games being played on Fridays and NCAA games being played on Saturdays until that time.

Yes, that's exactly why the NFL can't play on those days until December, when high school and college football (regular season) have finished. Bowl games aren't protected.
