NFL TV Rights After 2013

I know its only the 2011 NFL season coming this fall but could we possible see changes after 2013 when the deals are set to expire?

Turner Sports - is said to be interested, could that mean football returns to TNT

NBC Sports - Now mergered with Comcast, could we see more then just Sunday Night Football, possible a Sunday afternoon package with still having SNF but moved to Versus

CBS Sports - I don't see much changing, possible keeping Sunday afternoon package. They wouldn't want to lose the NFL rights a 2nd time now would they

ESPN - See them keeping Monday Night Football with things staying the same

FOX Sports - Could they lose the NFC afternoon package to NBC Sports? That would be huge for NBC Sports. Plus they just gave the NHL a nice deal. And have Comcast now.

NFL Network - Im sure they will have their usual NFL games on Thursday's or would they want to sell it?

Possibly even TBS, which would be the more visible of the two networks, IMHO...

Moot because by the time such a deal would go down, "Versus" will have been long gone...

See also: NBC Sports.

Doubtful anything changes...maybe a cable network change (Thursday Night to TNT maybe?) but the NFL is still OTA friendly...Sunday Night is their "A" game and that won't be moved to cable, that would mean all primetime games would be on cable, not going to happen. Comcrap might have the cash to grab the NFC away from Fox and keep Sunday Night, but Sunday night will stay on an OTA network as long as it's the NFL's A game.

We'll see how what happens post-lockout. If the fans aren't there, something untypical of the NFL could happen.

ABC will get back in maybe with Saturday or Friday Nights.

doubtful.........friday night is for the high schoolers and saturday is for the college kids (plus ABC already has a college football package that needs saturday night broadcast windows)

There's some NFL antitrust law that prevents any Friday night games between September and November IIRC for that express reason.

ABC won't get back in. That's why MNF is on ESPN. The ESPN division has a LOT more money. And they aren't going to do "ESPN on ABC" for a returned football game, like they do with the NBA Finals.

The ultimate question in all of this has to do with the NFL Channel. Do they make more money selling their own spots, or in selling the rights? They don't have to pay production costs when they license the rights to the networks. But having Thursday Night Football brings them bigger audiences than repeats, anthologies, or specials. There are only so many NFL properties to spread around, and spreading them around seems to be better and attract more money than concentrating it on fewer channels. But I agree with those who say status quo is probably going to be the goal in 2013, especially if the lockout continues, and the NFL is in rebuilding mode.

I'm going to put my money on Turner Sports picking it, but not just for TNT/TBS, but also for TruTV. Yes, call me crazy if you wish (which you would be accurate,) but TruTV does have, and is trying to get more of, the demo that NFL currently has.

The problem Turner has, which has also been a problem for Fox, is that the baseball playoffs take a lot of their attention for the first two months of the football season. Turner has more baseball this season, so we'll see how it works.

The NFL, as someone mentioned earlier, favors OTA coverage (moreso than any other league). And so my guess is that truTV, presumably because it is not as widely distributed as TNT or TBS, would not be under consideration by the NFL.

Of course, none of logic this applies to the NFL Network...

Re:Fox...they will not lose the NFL.

How can you be so sure? Didn't News Corp just recently lose some revenue?

Would FOX broadcast be alright without the NFL?

As for truTV having a NFL package due to how many households they are in. I guess the same would go for Versus which is on digital cable in some places. NBC could use USA Network instead thats in every household

Thanks to MySpace, which they're looking to unload.

The NFL makes money for everyone that airs it. Any smart broadcaster will dump lots of other things before it lets go of the NFL.

I'd be shocked to see Fox let the NFL go. Having the NFL brings prestige to a network's sports division, but that's especially true at Fox. Landing the NFL is what punched Fox's ticket to the bigs in the first place and it's a large part of the reason you see Fox stations with VHF virtual channel numbers today.

Doubt that. I'd hedge a bet on Thursday Nights either going to the rebranded Versus Network (Whatever they call themselves by then) or (Most likely considering possible NHL conflicts) to Universal Sports (You guys are forgetting this humble network)

But that ASS-U-MING that the NFL even wants to move that game off its own network though. My bet is they won't

I wouldn't bet on that. Both NBC & ESPN have had games which WERE NOT "A" game material on paper, but wound up on NFL Replay that week. In contrast, NBC has also had some STINK BOWL games too (Anyone remember the last appearance on SNF by the Buffalo Bills?)
Comcrap might have the cash to grab the NFC away from Fox and keep Sunday Night, but Sunday night will stay on an OTA network as long as it's the NFL's A game.
See above

Cheers :D

HELL WILL FREEZE OVER before TruTV gets NFL games. Spike TV has a MUCH better chance IMO !!!

Umm.....For a network that still has MLB & NASCAR & an entire sports division that not only has the aforementioned two but also has regional rights to the NBA, NHL, MLS, AFL & the WNBA plus several College conferences (One of which they own the network of), I'd have to say.....YEP !!! They'll be just fine without the NFL

The problem with USA Network is that it, by design, is no longer a sports network outside of WWE (Which ain't saying much)

Cheers :D

My thoughts exactly... Fox didn't make that blockbuster deal with New World for nothing...
