NGEN Launch on 91.7 delayed

KUHA is now running announcements stating that their switch to a "digital format" is moving forward and "should be complete by mid-July." They had previously promoted the switch as happening in June. So apparently KSBJ is not ready to close on the sale. Wonder if there are money issues? Looks like Classical will remain on 91.7 for several more weeks.

KUHA continues to run the prerecorded hours of Classical 24, separate from 88.7 HD-2 and the 91.3 translator which carry the live feed. I've heard some of the hours repeated several times on 91.7.

Or perhaps they finally came to their senses and realized that they were overpaying for the station. Just as University of Houston had.

At least with UH, they can pass the cost on to the students.

Perhaps KSBJ compelled to buy KUHA at any cost to prevent EMF from buying it and bringing K-LOVE to Houston and poaching KSBJ donors?

The more I think of it, perhaps EMF didn't really have much interest in 91.7 for K-Love, as the format would be too similar to KSBJ and on an inferior signal to 89.3. Unless they had thoughts of moving Air1 to 91.7 and putting K-Love on 103.7.

Would love to know who put in bids for 91.7, though. There had to have been a few religious operations that had serious interest.

Before I withdrew my opposition, /QUOTE]

Will someone please explain to me why a supposed minister would file petitions to deny against a Christian radio ministry. As I recalled, he also filed against KSBJ when they tried to acquire KROY.

Shortly thereafter, the alleged minister in question became an unlicensed pirate broadcaster, which is even more bizarre.

EMF could not launch K-Love on 91.7 because they do not own the trademark in the Houston market. Univision owns the K-Love trademark in Houston and Los Angeles, CBS owns the phonetically identical trademark "K-Luv" in the Dallas-Fort Worth market and EMF holds it everywhere else. Coincidentally, EMF has Air 1 stations in all three of those markets where they can't use K-Love.

I do believe that KSBJ is overpaying for 91.7 and UH overpaid previously, but I do not think that KSBJ is borrowing for this project. I can't remember where I saw it, but there was an interview with the KSBJ President that stated they have been saving for this day for a while. There was not going to be a note.

I have no idea why there is a delay, however, but there is little doubt that KSBJ has the financial resources to get this deal to closing.

My understanding is that Univision's rights to the "K-Love" branding in the Houston market have lapsed. Perhaps David Eduardo knows more?

I just looked up the service mark K-Love at the USPTO. I don't see anything about it being expired. The information page link is not shareable, but you can look it up yourself. The registration number is 3888349.

An inside source hinted to me today that there will be a major announcement in re 91.7 during KSBJ's ShareAThon coming up in a couple of weeks.

Let's hope it's to announce that they will receive a power or antenna height increase. I was listening to 91.7 in Southwest Houston yesterday, and it sounded at par or worse than their translator (91.3), and significantly worse than the KSBJ translator (99.5).

Was this decision approved by the donors, or does their voice matter? $10,000,000 seems like a large amount of money paid for a station with questionable coverage.

I'd much rather have the green coverage (KUHA 91.7) than the blue coverage (K258BZ 99.5)

My contact won't tell me anything because he knows I shared inside info on this board. Oh well... Mark 4:22-23 "For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

I'm afraid that application is taking Mark 4 horribly out of context.

It's now July 1 and Classical music is still going on 91.7. Nothing on the NGEN or KSBJ websites about any date for the format change.

It's been six weeks since the FCC greenlit the sale, but the transfer hasn't happened yet. Not as if anything really new is having to be created; technically just involves switching an STL into an already existing program stream.

Still wondering if KSBJ is having trouble coughing up the $10M.

:cool:I guess not enough folks willing to pay for their ticket to HEAVEN up front, Does not seem like a prudent use of ministry funds, K236AR would be a much better buy, if they could buy it, If they could buy a 100kw station on the 2000 ft Senior road tower and cover the entire area, they could sell all of their translators for big bucks to pay for it and still have some money in the bank.
