NHAB ANNUAL

The NHAB Awards Banquet tonight? One day affair these days? I haven't been in years. Used to be the Job Fair was Thursday,Friday was the seminars and then the night tine events.

Used to be earlier...October?

To those attending, have fun and Good Luck!

I do remember a two day NHAB. Essentially Thursday was the Job Fair. Friday was the all day seminars and night time love fest.

Kinda tough these days knocking off two full days of business when it can be done in one day.

Hey...I do wish those attending a good night and Good Luck. Can they still pack a room today? A lot of sales people and the station management with their wives and next door neighbors. Arent too many Programming Dept types left.

:)

That's for damn sure.

WTSN's Mike Pomp is a broadcast veteran for over 30 years, spending his 25th year at WTSN.

Mike is originally from New Jersey and has been a transplanted New Englander since 1973. His education background includes a Bachelors Degree from Rutgers University and a Masters Degree from Emerson College in Boston. Currently, Mike is the host of the WTSN Morning Information Center heard weekdays from 5am-9am, News Director of WTSN & WBYY and Host of the awarding winning "Open Mike" Talk show heard weekday mornings at 11. Mike recently received the Associated Press Talk Show of the Year award for his coverage of the December 2008 ice storms.

When he is not entertaining and informing on the radio, Mike can be seen throughout the year on New Hampshire Public Television as host of their yearly fundraising auctions and spokesperson for their membership campaigns.

Mike is currently on the Board of Directors of the Players Ring Theatre Group, and since 1984 he's been an actor in a variety of plays and musicals. Mike also performs as an Emcee for weddings, parties, and corporate functions through his mobile DJ company "Music on Wheels." And one other item of interest; Mike is a longtime Boston Celtics fan and a follower of the New York Yankees. (Sorry Red Sox Nation!)

Can someone who went give an assessment of the new "Format"? I haven't been in years but i've been told there was no dinner and the seminars were cut back. When I was up there and attended the NHAB put out a great spread and the cocktail hour was great. Our organization is strong like the NHAB but I have heard that the NHAB might be less organized and committed since Mr. Sprague's passing.

NO DINNER???

A cocktail hour...no dinner?

Al new better than that.

Not even chips, dip and some cheese and crackers.

And you are right. Sprague was the passion behind the NHAB (and the Massachusetts version as well).

Besides Broadcaster of The Year...who won awards?

Didn't WMUR and WZID sweep everything again except for Local PSA campaigns which some little station in the White Mountains usually wins?

I can't find results anywhere.

You asked! http://nhab.org/convention/winnerlist.cfm

I got there late because of a remote but I liked it. There were food stations. The room looked very nice with couches and clusters of seats with high tables. I could tell it was orginized by a younger person. It was very chic with a club/lounge feel to it. The awards went by QUICK! Even quicker then the amazing Tracy Caruso the year before. NO AUDIO OR VIDEOS were played. Not sure how I feel about that yet. The parting gift was a LARGE martini shaker. I liked it cause Im a roamer, I like to walk around and chat with people. I have a friend who didnt like it cause they like to sit at a table and converse, not mingle.

I will say it was sad to not see as many of the "old crowd". I truley missed alot of people who weren't there either because they didnt feel the need or arnt working in the biz any more.

Just my 2 cents

Club/Lounge atmosphere. Not unknown enviroment formany of the broadcasters attending.

No Audio or Video? Takes a little of the pump ou up and show out of the Biz,eh?

Station of the year WCNL Newport (one of Bob Vinikoor's managed by a sharp young guy named Steven Smith)!

WZID can't win everything!

Wow. How far the industry has come. I'm sure there was plenty of time for everyone to hit the bar at the end if it went that quick! NO A/V? They cheap out on Dinner and just get out and pass out awards while everyone is getting sauced in "Chic" couches and munching on appetizers? Did they at least do an audio montage for the broadcaster of the year or station of the year? I don't want to sound morbid but Al must be rolling over! Forgive them Al, for they know not what they do...!
It's actually possible they didn't have the cash to pull it off like in years past. In their defense they probably did what they could within their budget. The staff is the same only Al is missing and they were the driving force behind the event anyway. I have to beleive it was a budgetary move. I heard people only had to pay $10 to get in. Maybe they thought they'd get a better turn out if it was scaled back and cheaper... I guess all that mattered was that people still gathered, awards were given out and the booze kept flowing! Sounds like a good ol' fashioned "Bar night" remote!

Hold on, I do believe you're on to something.
Pool all of the stations for one giant NHAB awards bar remote.
Sell it to a large enough restaurant/bar and make money.

Better yet, trade it. ;)

I haven't been to them the last three years but I almost went this year since it was only $10 and I have been trying to reconnect with radio folks, since I'm looking for part-time non-sales work. I always had fun at the dinners but would have liked the cocktail hour feel of a jazz trio.

I didn't go to the job fair because I couldn't fit it into my sked. I heard from some folks who did go and told me it was good I didn't waste my time since there weren't many stations hiring. One person joked that it should have been called "The EEO Requirement Fair." Another noted that he found it funny that NHPR had a table there just months after laying off four full-time staffers. Oh well.

I imagine public radio would be the only one hiring non-sales staff types at this point. Good luck in finding part time work on air anywhere! Your competition is a lot of out of work people and the automation computer. So sad. Go south into Manchester, Boston or Worcester. More competition for jobs but at least there are some still around down there.
As for NHAB I've heard both sides of good and bad. Some liked it. Most were not impressed with the shortened awards and lack of dinner. Were there any seminars during the day?

I'll 'fess up that I haven't listened to them in years, but aren't they just automated country? Did no one else enter that competition?

Steve Smith does a LOT for that station. He's completely immersed in the community and that says a lot. I believe his morning show (it is the morning show, I believe) is live and he might have another which might be. All in all, he does one heckuva job for the "staff" he has there, and totally deserves the recognition. He pretty much runs the radio station himself... well, he and his wife I understand.
