NHL on OLN (Is It That Bad?)

From some of the other topics about the NHL on OLN some say the coverage isn't so great. Well I was watching one NHL game on OLN and the coverage doesn't look half bad. Graphics are well, go good with the NHL and the postgame set isn't half bad. Also like how the score box is on the bottom. I don't see a different much with when ESPN/ESPN2 showed NHL games. Yes I know this is just an opinion and I don't really watch hockey as I do other sports. But what does everything think?

Yeah, if you're the OUTDOOR Life Network, FIELD hockey is the hockey you show. :)

When OLN announced it'd landed the NHL, we all thought OLN would change its name by opening night. We guessed wrong - so far.

I don't think many people were complaining about OLN's broadcast of the game. The real issue is that OLN is not available to as many cable/satellite subscribers as larger networks such as ESPN.

Wasn't there an exhibition NHL game played outdoors a few years back? I believe it was in Montreal and the Habs were one of the teams involved.

And they've always carried the PBR, which holds most of its bull riding events in indoor arenas, so the name was never completely logical.

Why do we have teams west of Texas in the minor league ECHL which used to be known as the "East Coast Hockey League" but is now simply known as just the ECHL?

I don't think OLN means "Outdoor Life Network" anymore per say but it will shortly be changed to Comcast Sports Network or "CSN". You have to consider that OLN picked up the NHL about a month before the season was to begin so Comcast would've had to go through a creative and marketing group to pitch the new name of the network. Plus they're trying to get on more cable systems but the way they're going about it is hurting them and American viewership for the NHL. I have NHL Centre Ice on my cable and I love it and I would much rather watch CBC, TSN, or the Fox Sports Net channels for NHL hockey.

In November of 2003, there was a regular-season NHL game played outdoors in Edmonton, when the Oilers hosted the Montreal Canadiens. The game was shown nationally in Canada on CBC, but not in the United States.

I think ESPN also had a feed of that game. Not positive on that, as I watched it on NHLCI.

OLN is now just a meaningless acronym, just like ESPN. Still think an eventual name change isn't yet out of the question.

Unless they've changed something in the past two weeks, they made a purposeful decision to have tighter shots. The problem for traditionalists like me is that if they're showing the blue line, you can't see the net. You can't see full power play formations.

My brain is wired to watch hockey a certain way if I'm seeing it on TV. OLN has screwed with that to the point I will only watch their coverage if there is no hockey game on elsewhere.

Most of those western teams used to play in the now-defunct WCHL (West Coast Hockey League.) The WCHL ceased operations after the 2002-03 season, and the teams were absorbed into the ECHL (much like what happened with several IHL teams migrating to the AHL when the IHL went belly up in 2001.)

To eliminate the geographic imaging conflict, the ECHL dropped the official "East Coast" name and is now just an acronym (the ESPN comparison again.)

It was a regular-season game at Edmonton. Montreal was the opponent at Commonwealth Stadium.

Ape.

ESPN did not carry the game. I wanted to watch it for the novelty but it wasn't on ESPN or ESPN2.

ESPN Classic showed the game about a week after it happened (using the CBC broadcast).
