NHL Stanley Cup Semifinal Games Will Be Streamed By Peacock Premium Service

Has a shutdown date been set for NBCSN? Will it be killed off right after the Stanley Cup Playoffs -- which would make sense, seeing as how it has no significant summer programming -- or right before the college football season starts around the first week of September? I can't see it shutting down in the middle of the NCAA season.

Other than the Olympics. Ha! OK here's what they said:

NBCUniversal announced Friday that it will be shut down its sports cable channel, NBCSN, at the end of 2021.
Much of NBCSN’s sports programming will move to USA Network and to Peacock, the company’s new streaming service.

Yep, my guess is once the Olympics are over, and then maybe football season, that's when NBCSN will go away. Regarding Peacock, if you have Comcast cable, you get free access to Peacock Premium. We've already been using it to watch replays of the Olympic qualifiers and trials. I prefer watching the replay of the Olympic broadcasts on Peacock, as you can skip over interviews if you don't find them interesting, forward past certain events if you like, or jump past the graphic they show during commercial breaks.

I signed up for the free version of Peacock but couldn't get it to work on my ancient Windows 7 PC on either Chrome or Firefox. I still have DSL, but am able to watch ESPN+ and MLB.TV on my computer with no problems at all. I suppose at some point I'll have to get the full broadband experience (wireless) but was hoping that Peacock would accommodate the laggards for the time being. Guess not. Their loss of potential $$$.

Interesting that tonight's Stanley Cup semi-final between Las Vegas and Montreal is being shown on USA Network. Meanwhile over at NBCSN, they're showing the Olympic Track & Field trials. I guess the priority is obviously on the Olympics.

How so? NBCSN is the "dead man walking" network and has lower overall viewer numbers than USA anyway.

And Montreal wins in OT, and moves to the Final for the first time since 93. Only 3500 allowed inside Bell Center.
Another lump of coal for a parting gift from the NHL to NBC -- a Canadian team in the final guarantees minuscule US ratings and, I would imagine, make-goods to advertisers (maybe free spots during the upcoming Olympics, since the NHL won't be back on the network after this final series). Their opponents will be either the Islanders or Lightning, so I suppose the former would be better for the network financially although the Isles don't have nearly as big a following as the Rangers in the New York market.

That's right, how dare the NHL send a Canadian team to the Stanley Cup finals. They should definitely rig it so only American teams can win! Canadians have no business playing hockey on NBC. Excellent analysis.

In the semi-final game played tonight, the Lightning defeated the NY Islanders, so the Stanley Cup Final will be played between the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning and the heritage Montreal Canadiens. Start popping the popcorn!

If the final is anything like either of the semis, it will be one talked about among hockey fans for years. But for all of NBC's efforts to promote the league during its years with the contract (until this lame duck year), the NHL still has limited TV appeal outside of its home markets. The product, IMO, is as attractive to watch as it's been in decades, but hockey remains best appreciated from a seat in the lower bowl of the arena, not from the couch.

As one of the New England baby boomers who became Bruins fans for life in the Orr/Esposito years, I have no team I'm rooting for in this series, but I sure know who I'm rooting against.

The Stanley Cup Final are being shown on NBCSN and NBC:

First two on NBCSN, next two on NBC, and then we see.

Continuing its hard-line stance against easing COVID restrictions, the Quebec government has rejected another appeal by the Montreal Canadiens to allow additional fans into Bell Centre for the Stanley Cup playoffs, this time for Games 3 and 4 of the finals. The games will now be watched by no more than 3,500 separated, masked fans. I wonder if the league's TV partners here and in Canada will be "sweetening" the crowd noise to give the illusion of a rowdy full house and raise the excitement level of the telecasts, as was done often during the darkest days of sports in the pandemic.

It appears the Finals clubs (Montreal and Tampa) are showing the game outside their respective arenas on a very big screen with thousands in attendance.

There were big crowds outside the building in Montreal in the previous round of the playoffs, too. Apparently law enforcement thought it best not to disperse them, given the iconic status of both ice hockey and Les Canadiens. I've seen photos of the happy throngs posted, though, as evidence that COVID must be a hoax.

The Canadian government has limited attendance inside the Bell Center to 3500 fans. So that means most of the fans are outside, watching on monitors. They showed the throng during the semi-finals, and I don't think it's healthier to have all those people slammed together outdoors, but what do I know. Of course Florida has no rules at all.
