NIAGARA'S CLASSIC ROCK 91.7 FM

I just discovered this station. Definitely an alternative for Buffalo listeners who are growing tired of 97 Rock's playlist.

http://www.giantfm.com/

Their "deep cuts and giants classics" format is well done.

Anyone have any thoughts on their jocks? I'm a fan of Paul Wainwright on weekday afternoons.

Can you pick it up easily in a car in the Buffalo area? I did a lot of driving around this week and really missed the Lake bad for the first time (Most of my time is spent in front of the computer, so I can listen to anything I want then).........Is this comparable to The Lake?

I just looked at their top 500 all time, and can't believe they have Born To Run all the way down at #91. VH1 had it at number five.

I'm a Bruce fanatic and haven't understood where he stands with classic rock for the last 15 years or so. I rarely heard him on 97 Rock and I stopped listening because there is only so much Boston, ZZ Top, etc. that I can take, and I reached my limit long ago.

But, then when Bruce comes to town for his usual sellout, 97 Rock then proclaims it is 97 Bruce. Can any of you pros explain why Bruce seems to not fit the 97 Rock, and this 91.7 mode of classic rock?

bbb, I've been beating this drum for years... http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=117495.0

Ha, looks like I'm at least consistent with what I say. I almost said the exact same thing in your thread 2 1/2 years ago, as I did above. I agreed with you then and I agree with you now. I just still don't get it! I mean ZZ Top is playing free concerts now. Bruce's last concert in Buffalo was a mega-event with Hollywood stars, etc:

I'm a huge Bruce fan, so I pretty much know who plays what. 97 Rock doesn't play him unless he's coming to town. Then they even have bumper stickers and what have you saying "97 Bruce" - give me a break, they play more ZZ Topp, Boston, etc. in a day than they play Bruce in a month.

The Lake plays an incredible selection of Bruce songs. Songs that I thought I would be the only person in Buffalo who ever heard of them.

Any other station will play Dancing in the Dark and Hungry Heart and that is about it.

I like this station a lot. They remind me a bit of what 97.7 CHTZ sounded like twenty years ago. Some of the older Canadian tracks I've heard are refreshing to hear.
I was listening to this out in Arcade, NY a few weeks back so the signal carries fairly well.

Some people here just discovering 91.7 Giant FM? It's been on my car pre-sets for years. The signal in Lancaster is strong and the music variety is good. In the last hour I've heard Van Halen's "Jamie's Crying," "Fantasy" from Aldo Nova, Dire Straits "So Far Away," "Reflections Of My life" by Marmalade and a few decent Can-Con tracks. Giant also does some interesting things every so often with short comedy tracks between the songs. The jocks are OK. They sound live but could be voice tracked. It's hard to tell. They come up with local stuff and music references, but no long-winded story time backsells that the Lake was famous for. Giant FM isn't as hard and crashing as Hits FM, although 97.7 is still on my pre-set. And Toronto's amazing Q107 is on the first tier.

the spirit of radio (not to be confused with the
early years of CFNY) were once on at 91.7 - spirit FM
as a country station -
when they flipped thought, ( and hoped) for
a top40 station - mind u this is before the
over saturation of chr's in southern ontario
(very southern ontrario ) haha....
i liked them as c-How am.1470 !!!
only time i reeely invested my listenership
into country/ was 1470/91.7

91.7 keeps changing their format every couple of years though.
I'm guessing they'll relaunch under a new format again to ring in the new year... (or sooner)

I liked the Classic Hit Giant 91.7 format that they maintained when they first switched from the Country format (As Spirit 91.7) to the new Giant 91.7.
"If it was big then...it's GIANT now!".

Their present Classic rock format is still good.

Programmers should definitely keep it classic rock for now, especially with the uncertainty over what is going to happen with 96.9 FM and 103.3 FM in Buffalo.

Buffalo rockers don't rely on a station in Welland for entertainment. Giant is maybe a P3 station. Yes, Q107 and 97-7 Hits FM score a few shares in the Buffalo book, but 97 Rock and the Edge are Buffalo. Even with the approaching Cumulus takeover of Citadel, it's doubtful something (as in 'format change') is going to "happen" to 97 Rock and the Edge. They make gobs of money. And as noted in another thread, they're on TV and bus cards. Whether it's a trade, cash or combo deal is irrelevant. They're promoting. They're on the streets. And it's likely they'll have a much better in-demo Spring '11 book than Winter '11. The ongoing negotiations between the NFL and its players, creating uncertainty about the 2011 NFL season and the effect those issues may have on the Bills flagship stations, might be of more concern than anything else at this point.

91.7 replaced 107.7 on my first tier of stations on the car radio. It's real hit-or-miss for me. It sometimes offers a nice alternative to WHTT and 97-Rock, but it rarely sticks around for more than a song or two.

Well, 91.7 is also forced to play 35% Canadian Content. That would make any Canadian station sound different from the American stations they have to compete with.

Personal Opinion: Think the Can-Con (rule),
is over used as an "excuse"
-Listen to WEDG, perhaps they (unintentionally)
fulfill the Can Con with artists of their choice.

It ain't the Can-con. I've listened to border radio most of my life. It's the obscure - not just deep - cuts that have me reaching for the button.

WLLW in Geneva plays several non hit Bruce tunes or rarely heard hits. I played Thunder Road last week and E Street Shuffle a few weeks before that. You can listen online.
