Nice 960

During a recent drive through the Harrisburg area, I've got to say, no pun intended, that "Nice 960" is a "Nice" little station. At 36 years old, I can still appreciate the music. John Tesh's tidbits are corny, but they work just fine on this format. I also never realized what a "nice" footprint their signal has, holding onto it clearly deep into Berks County while driving west to east. Does this outfit make an impact on the ratings? Is anyone listening? It's also "nice" to see the use of the slogan "Nice," a slogan used twice that I know of in Central PA ("Nice 101.3," prior to "The Rose" and "Nice 92.1" up until the late 1990s). What's the story with "Nice 960?" Making money? Just a lonely little station airing a satellite format?

Nice 960 WHYL is one of a kind. It is not a satellite format...it is locally programmed, with a live morning show hosted by Carlisle and Harrisburg radio vet Ben Barber. They play a good mix of standards and oldies....very pleasant to listen to. While most AM signals have been eroded in this day and age, WHYL stlill packs a punch. A NICE station to listen to.

Agree on the good signal--last month on my way to the Delaware beaches I listened to Ben's morning show in New Castle Del. On the other end of the spectrum they can be heard in Winchester Va. Pretty decent directional shot east and west.

Remember well the old studios in the late 60's early 70's. Wish I could have confiscated the marble call sign and frequency on either side of the front door before the building was torn down.

A lot of local broadcast history pushed into a pile of rubble.

An excellent frequency,5 kilowatts,a good ground system, proper transmitter and phasor maintenance
equals a good signal .

I travel to Hershey twice a year, and I enjoy listening to WHYL when in the area. The day signal is good heading West on I-78 from just beyond the Allentown area. Here in the Lowell MA area sometimes close to sunset I can pick up WHYL before they drop to night power.

WHYL is an example of independent ownership at its best! In a world where almost all FM stations chase the 25-54 demo and every AM has to have talk programming, Nice 960 carves out a unique niche. Good signal, well processed audio, appropriately imaged and a playlist you won't find on five other radio stations! Top that off with a heritage morning show and credible news person and you've got one fine station.

WHYL is a good sounding station that is unique. Why aren't there more AM stations like this? Right wing talk, sports, brokered and religious stations dominate the AM band. It would be so nice to have a personality oriented station that plays older oldies(50's,60's) and MOR. WHLI on Long Island is the only other station that comes to mind. Older demos,of course. If WHYL and WHLI can do this, why not others? So many listeners over 50 would love stations like these.

I worked with Ben Barber almost 40 years ago at WHYL. He was and still is doing mornings. He did leave for several years, though. He still sounds good. Kudos to "Nice 960" for doing something different.

Their 22 watt nighttime signal can get out pretty well too, according to my girlfriend's dad, he said that he heard somewhere that they were received by someone in I believe it was Sweden.
