Nick Gerard, I need a recommendation

Last year Nick suggested that an essential Sinatra collection should include "Songs For Swingin' Lovers."

Collectors Choice Music is offering the Capitol Concept albums for $14.98 each or 3 for $40. Of course, I'll have to get "Songs For Swingin' Lovers" and the highly-regarded "Sings for Only the Lonely" judging by the comments from all the posters in that Frank Sinatra thread. What should my third choice be? Here are the options (from the ones I don't already have)...

"Close To You and More" (1957)
"A Swingin' Affair" (1957)
"Where Are You" (1957)
"No One Cares" (1959)
"Sinatra's Swingin' Session! And More (1961)
"Come Swing With Me" (1961)
"Conducts Tone Poems of Color" (no year; just says "boldly experimental featuring Frank at the baton")
"Point Of No Return" (no year; "Frank's last album for Capitol reunited him with Axel Stordahl")

(I noticed there seems to be an over-use of the word "Swingin'" on Frank's albums... I wonder if it's hard to tell them apart).

Hello Hen....

Of the choices you've listed, I would enthusiastically recommend "Point Of No Return" - an often overlooked album. Wonderfully lush string arrangements by Frank's primary 1940's arranger, Axel Stordahl, and sensitive interpretations by the Man, especially "These Foolish Things," "I'll Remember April," and "Memories of You." Very romantic. As I said, a lotta strings, similar to the album "September of My Years," (w/G. Jenkins) but more romantic than reflective. A beautiful, beautiful album which doesn't get the accolades it deserves.

If you'd rather have something bright, up-tempo and just plain fun, go for "Sinatra's Swingin' Session" with Nelson Riddle. Just look at the song list - it's a winner!

Enjoy!

Nick Gerard

"Point Of No Return" it is. As soon as I read about the string arrangements, I remembered another topic specifically about this album from the old Radio-Info a couple years ago.

Blue Hen, in addition to buying Frank's albums, I would strongly suggest you listen to 1340 WHAT, which streams at martiniloungeradio.com. They pick up on KYW's "give us 22 minutes and we'll give you the world" and use "give us 22 minutes and we'll give you Sinatra." Plus a solid hour of Frank at noon.

They don't just play the hits, but also play less often heard album cuts.

It's fun to read these older topics.

I bought some of these... haven't played all of them yet. But wanted to comment that I liked "Sinatra's Swingin Session" as well as "Point Of No Return." However, I just could not get into "Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely." Every track sounded identical to me and I found it rather monotonous. Oh well, that's why there's vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.
