Nick, MTV, VH-1, CMT, TV Land - Sign Off

Noticed that tommorow morning at 5:00am Nick will sign off while MTV, VH-1, CMT, and TV Land will sign off at 5:30am. According to the tv guide on the cable box. Wonder why because just a few months ago they did a sign off. Also Spike TV and the digial channels of Nick, MTV, and VH-1 aren't included.

Bet it's for satellite maintenance or something along those lines.

At one point, I have seen all of the Starz! networks sign off at the same time for this purpose, as well.

Some HBO/Cinemax networks sign off for 1 1/2 hours sometime during the week (around 5:30-7AM Pacific time) for maintenance. Remember when HBO was only on for several hours a night back in the late 70s/early 80s?

That made DXing a lot easier! ;D

Viacom's channels have always signed off for half an hour for maintenance purposes or whatever, stemming back into the 1980s.

Of course back then, they would often find better ways to fill the spare time than just a test pattern -- Nick would use their "sign off" time to feed Nick and Nick-at-Nite promos to cable stations for use in their local ads. I think a website on sign offs and/or YouTube has a copy of a promo reel somewhere.

Some cable nets sign off at 3am est. like TNN the Nashville network did.

In the case of such channels, which also include TLC, Discovery and ABC Family, they would show infomercials during the off-hours.

Or it could be that the cable box's program guide hasn't downloaded information for that particular time and "sign off" is the default.

Actually, TNN would sign off prior to 3am eastern and clip the last few minutes of the "Dukes of Hazzard".
