Nickie Minaj - Starships

Really? On Hot AC? I heard this on KPLZ this morning, what do they think they're doing? Hot AC has picked up some interesting songs over the last year, Rihanna - We Found Love, wouldn't have put this on my Hot AC right away unless someone else was playing it, though the fictional Hot AC I am creating seems pretty rhythmic, just need to finish up the playlist and will post here when complete. Fun - We Are Young and Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks I thought would stay on the rock-leaning Hot ACs like also local KLCK, but look where they are. The Wanted - Glad You Came same as Rihanna above, but this song? I would rather here Give Your Heart a Break by Demmee Lavato on Hot AC, wonder why no station in this market is playing this? I really like it and would love to hear it on local radio!

KDMX here in Dallas plays it a lot, as well as pitbull, LMFAO etc..They got rid of all the 90's stuff and have recently rebranded as 102.9 NOW instead of Mix 102.9

That station is more of an adult top 40 as KPLZ seems to be shifting towards, but they still play a lot of 80s and 90s. How about a station like KJMY/Salt Lake City or KBIG/Los Angeles?

The Wanted & Rihanna songs are huge crossover hits and fit in well with the female leaning hot AC stations. When you have songs like this that moms and their teen like you have a winner.

Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks. Song that played when it was at the top, and will (and should) fade away.

Nickie Minaj, don't know about that one.

Hot AC will probably embrace more "safe rap" songs, or songs that are entirely rap, from artists like Gym Class Heroes and Black Eyed Peas.

KDMX is arguably a CHR now - since Clear Channel co-owns KHKS, though, they're gonna want to keep KDMX classified as Hot AC

I actually think this is tame compared to some of the rhythmic tracks my local Hot AC has started breaking out - how many Hot AC's are playing "Sexy & I Know It" or "Love The Way You Lie?" They're even playing older hip hop/rhythmic-like tracks such as "Lose Yourself." Quite a few Hot AC's have been playing "Wild Ones" also which seems a little odd.

One of the most CHR-leaning Hot ACs I can think of is WGER Mix 106.3 in Saginaw. Ten years ago, this was a soft AC known as Magic 106.3 with Delilah at night. Now, here are some of the songs they have in gold rotation:

In Da Club - 50 Cent
Boom Boom Pow - Black Eyed Peas
Low - Flo Rida
Yeah! - Usher
The Way I Are - Timbaland
I'll Be Missing You - Puff Daddy et al.
Mo Money Mo Problems - Notorious B.I.G.
Hot In Herre, Ride Wit Me - Nelly

On the other hand, the station is also playing the new Alanis Morissette, All American Rejects, John Mayer, and Theory of a Deadman, so it's right on the line between Hot AC and Adult CHR.

My 102.5 in Greenville has started playing Kanye West's "Gold Digger" in addition to the tracks I mentioned above. They play a lot of the Peas as well.
It's still Hot AC, but some of the rhythmic stuff isn't very typical of Hot AC.

They, too, used to be a AC with Delilah. When I heard "Gold Digger" and "Sexy & I Know It" I nearly had a stroke.

WWMX in Baltimore is still very CHR'ish at night.

It's where the format is right now. Hot AC music trends are very predictable from a BROAD perspective. Right now it's smack in that Top 40/rap crossover period. It's just adaptation. I'm sure in the next 3 to 5 years it'll be completely different and we'll be reacting the same way to a song that sounds nothing like "Starships."

So I guess KMXP is the only one playing Airplanes by BOB. How ironic. KMXP is so conservative that they're almost an alternative station... but they play that. I don't even think KEXX plays it.

I've heard "Starships" twice on KBIG now. I thought it was an odd choice for Hot AC, but they also play LMFAO, Eminem/Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna- so I guess its not that big of a stretch.

Rhythmic music, more specifically hip-hop, has been such a big part of pop culture over the past 30 years, that even the upper demos of a Hot AC station are probably fans of the music. I guess it isn't 1998 anymore and we shouldn't be surprised to hear an occassional hip hop song on Hot AC.

Rihanna's "We Found Love" is now on some mainstream AC's too. Can you believe that?

I heard Only Girl In the World on Spokane's AC just this morning. That station has gotten increasingly rhythmic in the last 6 months. Love The Way You Lie is a bit of a stretch for US hot ACs, but I've heard it a couple of times on Canadian Hot ACs.

It's no longer played now on KDMX "102.9 Now" since they quietly switched back to it's original format since the "Adult Top 40" failed in this market.
