Sorry to see him go. We didn't always see eye to eye on everything, but he ran a tight ship.

With luck, he'll land a gig at a CHR station, which he was always better suited to.

Access.1/AC changes PDs

"Nicky G" was Nick Giorno. Wish you put his real name in the thread and not just his nickname.

Rich DeSisto is the new PD for Access.1/AC and PM drive host for 103.7 The Shark.

Speaking of Access.1 its TV station, NBC 40, has all but gone DT less than a year before the FCC-mandated cutover.

Who really cares his on air name is Nicky G and he was a very bad PD for many years. So yes I can call him Nicky G if I want.

BJ...first, the correct way of writing it is "He should have been fired...",. I'd have to look twice at anyone on-the-air who has such a poor command of the language.

Second, I worked with Mr. Giorno for more than a decade. To me, he was always a man of his word. Many times his ideas were limited to budgets and the realities of radio in 2008. If you've been out of the business for a while, you have no clue. NONE.

Third, Mr. Giorno inherited the sometimes arguable dictates of the corporate consultant. The consultant is a likeable man with many fabulous ideas, but some that did not translate well in execution or to the South Jersey market.

He struggled to, and succeeded, in making KOOL a very fun companion in the car and at work. The Shark was hampered by the fire which destroyed the transmitter building and all electronics. Thanks to Tom McNally, we had a signal on 103.7 literally before the smoke cleared. But getting permits to rebuild from the City of Pleasantville, the NJ DEP, Fish & Wildlife and whatever miles of bureaucratic red tape was painfully slow. Then foot dragging by Atlantic Electric to get full power. How can you possibly blame Nick for this? What role did he play?

Nick was a sometimes brilliant PD with a keen eye to financial gains for the company, balanced with old fashioned service for the community and entertainment for the listener. He could be a ball buster too, and I usually deserved it. But it wasn't his railraod, he just punched the tickets. He doesn't deserve your vitriol.

Whatever happened to Access.1 buying those properties in Pennsylvania, is that a dead deal???? Or could Nicky G end up there?

amfmsw,

The excuses need to stop already! You say it wasn't Nick's railroad, he just punched the tickets..the credo he lived by was and I quote "This is my ball, my game, anyone who doesn't like it, get the f&*k out". Well, many listeners did get out, so...Game Over, Coach! The consultant should be the next to go. $26,000 is wasted on Mr. Cliche for his 2 visits per year when he's more concerned about trying to get a little tail than getting more ratings. He once told management "We don't program for ratings". Obviously!! Let's hope new blood will right the sinking ship!

Successful businesses constantly evaluate whether an employee is doing an adequate job, should they be retained, let go, or given a raise. In radio, sales employees are evaluated in dollars, the money they bring in. Don't sell, you go, end of story. GMs are evaluated by profit after sales minus expenses. And for air and programming, employees are evaluated by Arbitron ratings. I know it's not fair - Arbitron does a terrible job of sampling, but how else do we determine whether a PD or talent is doing the job, or deserves more money? Better ratings translate into more money for the company. Unless something better comes along, we will always be judged by our numbers.

Nick Giorno's Arbitron record is a classic case of an underperforming OM. Since his takeover of all three stations in the local Access 1 cluster, the numbers have been a disaster. According to Arbitron, KOOL has lost over half it's listeners. No power problems here, a great cume this past book, but horrible TSL. JSE has lost even more listeners, so many that it's truly shocking. And you can't blame all the loss on losing Stern - that was what, three years ago? And, flagship WMGM's numbers have fallen dramatically. Yes, they were at a lower power after the fire, but frankly the signal that McNally got them on top of the Taj was better than KOOL's or JSE's. And haven't they been at 20k for the last year? They cume like gangbusters. So maybe they didn't reach Brick, but they covered the metro very well. The only station Nick was not directly involved with was WOND, which has had some amazing ratings success.

Granted, Nick did not get any help from the consultant. Having personally worked with the man, I can tell you that he contributed very little to the programming successes at our stations. And some truly horrible ideas that fortunately never saw the light of day. He's the kind of guy who takes all the credit when things are going good, sells you out to management if things go sour. I saw him do this to two PDs/MDs. There are much better consultants out there.

But I would never in my wildest dreams call Nick Giorno a "brilliant" PD. His work record was abysmal (how often did he blow off his airshift), he bullied his co-workers and "was a man of his word" only when it personally benefited him. He took every advantage of the system that he could.

The truth is that Access 1 made the right move (finally). They are better off without him. WMGM has sounded better this week with their new PD, than EVER! I don't know the new guy, but I wish him well. And amfmsw, be careful who you flame. Call Allison W and ask her about an aircheck review of a young part timer many years ago.

amfmsw,

By the way, Mr. Wikipedia, it's "sentences". Now, apologize to BJD. He could be your boss someday!

Let me be crystal clear and put this to rest. I mean to "flame" no one. But I don't like seeing public flogging. If anything, my response is to the "flaming" that began this thread. It is a professional situation, not personal.

The RE-20 response is a sensible, professional, objective, reasonable response. Some others seem too personal. There was no public flogging when other PD's left other stations. Why now? Calm down and lighten up. This is a public forum of discourse, not a dumping ground to grind axes.

If you have a personal message, write me. Just click on my handle name. Simple. I'm not hiding. Convince me I'm wrong. But like each of you, I too have an opinion and point of view and personal experiences. I respect yours, even if I disagree on points. I ask the same in return without public threats.

Let's move on.

In clossnig,, tes, sommetymes my speelign iz pour at thymes...phat fngers. :)

"So if she weighs the same as a duck... "

"... she's made of wood!"

"And therefore..."

"... A WITCH!"

Sorry... just thought I'd add a nonsensical Monty Python reference to lighten things up a bit...

From what I'm hearing I think the employees at Access 1 wouldn't mind having Nicky G back.
Word on the street is the new guy is not working out.

And what street would that be? "I don't know what I'm talking about" Street? LET IT GO.

The "I haven't heard one good word about him" street.
(put that in your little pipe and smoke it tough guy)

roof...Please reread the second paragraph of Reply #11 above.

I haven't "heard" anything good, or bad, about ANY of the A.C. PDs; Gary Guida, Steve Raymond, or whoever, either. Their quality work, and rating, speaks for itself. The tighter sound of Access's FM's speak volumes of "the new guy"'s work ethic, attention to detail, ability to rally his crew to support him and execute his new ideas. Like Gary and Steve, he's a pro. As Gary and Steve are respected, so should be "the new guy".

The facts suggest you truly know not of what you write, or it's personal.

In closing, "the street" is the worst place to get quality information. Each one has two gutters and a drain as well. For those who like public, anonymous lynchings, go join the fun on the Phila Board and pull the wings off of radio2007.

I have to agree with amfmsw, access1 sounds more focused. I listen to mgm and jse when i'm down there (four days a week) and the new guy seems to have tightened up the station. Doesn't sound as stale and all over the map. Before Desisto joined the company,
I heard Skynyrds Gimme back my bullets segue into Buffets margaritaville then into acdc on the midday cafe. Since Rich has been there the borderline format trainwrecks have all gone to bed.

hey am,

This is a FORUM. This is the place where people discuss the rumors and "words on the streets." That's why they call it a forum. A place for people to express opinions and have respectful debates. Not for you to big time people.
Gary and Steve have already proven they can program.
I am telling you that I heard the "new guy" isn't working out. You can take that information and do what you want with it, but you can not tell people what that can and cannot write on this forum.
