Nielsen: 189 channels but most only watch 17

I get hundreds of channels via my satellite provider. I have, perhaps, 10 channels which I watch regularly. It's sad that had to subscribe to this many channels just so I could receive the few which I watch.

I only have a dozen or so channels that I watch. So does my wife, though only about half of our channels overlap. If our kids still lived with us, each of them had their own favorite channels. On the one hand, I don't like the principle of paying for channels I don't want to watch. On the other hand, I understand how things work, and how bundling blocs of channels helps keep my favorite niche channels in business.

Sounds about the same as non cable subscribers too.
Of the 152 channels available OTA in Los Angeles, I only have 28 marked in my channel rotation.
Of that 28, 20 are marked as favorites.
I'm just above the bell curve.

Let's see ... the four major network affiliates and the PBS station. That's five. ESPN, ESPN2, NBCSN, NESN, YES, MLB Network, NHL Network. That's seven more, for 12. TBS, CNN, SyFy, History, C-Span every so often. Exactly 17, can't think of any more I watch. That is, if I actually had cable -- I cut the cord four years ago and find pretty much everything I want on the Internet.

I bet you can eliminate half the channels because they are either a) spoken in a foreign language, b) religious programming, or c) shop at home programming
At least that's the case for me in the NYC area.

What the heck is "ADSM," which is outside the top 10 in prime time, but No. 3 overall?

It's an abbreviation for the Cartoon Network's nightly programming block Adult Swim (even though the Nielsen Company counts it as a separate national TV programming service).

I can't afford to have that many channels. And yet they tell us "a la carte" wouldn't save money.

Meanwhile, they took away two of my channels--I was told first that I need a cable car and a converter box, then the man asked did I want these channels (one Christian and one with the community college's announcements and audio mostly from an oldeis station) and I said no.

And my bill STILL went up!

Could be tough to do if you aren't in the SF/Oakland market.

I believe vchimpanzee meant to type "card" after the word "cable".
