Nielsen Buffalo Ratings -- Fall 2018

If I'm selling survivalist supplies to a 65+ audience, I'm buying WBEN. If I'm selling tickets to concerts, I'm going with WECK. If I'm selling Cadillacs, I'm probably buying both.

WBEN is #1 Survivalists 65+, so that's a pretty smart buy. You might want to look into WYRK as a secondary, however. Their Survivalist CPM is quite competitive, and they'll probably bonus Jack. If you have the budget for two (and a half) stations, you'll have great reach.

Ahem.

According to a knowledgeable source, Persons 25-54, Monday-Sunday, 6 a.m.-midnight, WECK scored a share just slightly higher than 0.5 ... also the average age of WECK listeners is around 72 ... additionally, according to the source, WBEN draws nearly three times as many Persons 65+ than does WECK

Kudos to the board admins for addressing the log-in snafu

Just FYI, the WECK average age is 66, not 72, if you believe Nielson. And for your your further edification, WBEN does not have triple the amount of 65 plus. This is why i can't stand reading these boards. It is because you folks simply do not know the facts. I subscribe to Nielson EVERY MONTH. I know the numbers. WECK has nearly a 60,000 person cume 12 plus in the Fall book. Highest EVER. I use 12 plus because that is the biggest sample size, for this example. You have to realize that WECK is a 1,000 watt -AM station mainly covering just Erie County. A 2 share, 3 share, 4 share, 5 share is pretty damn good! Our 4 book average now is about a 2.7. Beating WBUF. WLKK, and coming close to some others.

Do I wish we had a better Fall book- of course, but we are 1 point higher than last Fall. What hurt us in the Fall is sports, and the Christmas stations. Simple as that. But our cume rose. That is what I want.

Folks, I have some great stuff I will be letting you know about in 2019. WECK will continue to grow. We will not be number 1. But we will be a solid top ten. If we had a 50,000 watt signal, the situation would be much different. I am curious why the only thing talked about on this board is WECK. There has to be some fascination. Either you are rooting for me, or you hate me. I try to let everyone know the facts, as i see them. I am VERY happy with our position in the market -I simply do not care about the 25-54 market. So if you need to know real numbers, feel free to ask, I will tell you them. I get them every month. In the meantime, sit back tonite and listen to my new show on WECK called the "Elvis Experience" from 5p-7p. If your a king fan, I think you'll like it.

Maybe it's neither. Maybe it has absolutely nothing to do with you. There was a fascination with this station before you bought it. It continues.

But do you see any other GMs or owners on this board making various claims or statements about their stations? Maybe there's a reason.

Good to have you back, Buddy. You have to admit you've made some strong statements on how WECK would do in the ratings that haven't happened. Maybe they will. I for one hope they do. So I guess I'm in the "rooting for you" group.

It appears Double Secret Probation is over. The Wizard of Weck has returned. If, If, If... frogs had wings they wouldn't park their butts on lily pads. BigA makes a valid point. It's not a matter of rooting for or against. You blew the shofar about a 4 share, then doubled down to a 5. You came up short. What did you expect posters here to write?

I once asked the wife of a big pop star how she felt about having all the girls scream for her husband. She said she didn't care because at the end of the day, she got to go home with him. She knows the real truth. Sort of the same thing here. No need to get involved in the screaming over who's right or wrong. At the end of the day, Buddy collects the money, and the rest of us just eat leftovers.

Well since most owners are far away on wall street - no, I don't see them making statements. Maybe they don't give a shit about their roles and responsibilities as owners. There was a fascinations about WECK before i bought it? Really? I would go back to posts before i bought the station, and there are barely none.

I have made statements that someday WECK will have a 5 share. It will. I have owned the station for 17 months. We got a 3.0 share- not bad. Give it time. We are a 6 month old station with our oldies format. Just give it time.

I NEVER SAID when WECK would get a five share - I am not that stupid - If you can find me a post that says I will have a 5 share by....______date, I will eat crow. Find one that says then the five share will be achieved by. I had a 3 share dude, not too far off. The reason I am on this board is because I am here, and I care. I really don't think others companies do too much.

Another thing regarding ratings. They are VERY undependable. Good or bad. It is a really messed up old system. There was a trend over the Fall book that showed WECK with a 3 share 18-34, because 1 diary that a 34 year old filled out mentioned WECK. I care about our listeners and getting results for our clients - thats it. The bigger shares will happen, and that will be icing on the cake. As far as my radio stations go, I think they sound great. We have worked our asses off to achieve this

Kind of proves my point, doesn't it? NO ONE was really talking about WECK until i bought it. Since then, it is the #1 thing talked about on this board

How much money does that make you? My advice is to people who work with me is: Focus on what makes money.

... WECK will be blowing some corporates out of the water. I have seen the August trends. WECK is in the 4 shares 12 plus, beating WBUF, WMSX, WEDG, WLKK. These are not small stations. I have a 1KW AM!!!!!!!!! These are 50K watt heritage stations I am beating. 12 plus!!!!!!!!! I can tell you right now, that WECK is a top 8 station RIGHT NOW, 12 plus. I do not understand what clearer facts you all need. I have seen August and July! I did not see our demo 50 plus, which is bound to be top 5. What I do not is that several posters said WECK would never get a 4 share....not true. In august it has a 4.2 We will get a 5 share soon. You folks are simply out of the loop. You will never admit I know how to run a radio company and how to make it win. When I look at WECK - I think of my AM station. WECK is an AM metro station. The 2 FM's are added value for listeners and advertisers. However, the combination of the three frequencies, voice activated devices, internet streaming, Bluetooth, puts WECK on a more fair playing field. Wait until you see the new tower we have coming!!! The reason I cant stand these arguments are that most people here are either not in radio any more, or part time, just hanging on. You simply do not know the facts. I do. I am in it. I get the revenue. I get the expenses. Rox, in a prior post you said that "WECK could not or would not get 100.5FM". I knew you were dead wrong because I knew the facts. Here is another fact, I will be purchasing a major Buffalo FM soon. You can say till the cows come home on how that won't happen. I am here to tell you it is GOING to happen. It's not a matter of if.

TBOLT has been routing against WECK from the start....saying many times we won't get a 4 share. WECK HAS a 4.2 share in Aug for 12 plus!!!!!!! Number 8 in the entire market. I know this as fact. How can you dispute these things???? WECK is, and is going to continue to be the talk of the market and the talk of radio nationwide. Others will realize that the template I came up with makes total sense.

"Five share" ... "Soon" Next month? Next Book? Spring 2019?

My apologies, I double checked - the average age of WECK is 63, not 66

The Fall book seems to show about 63% of AQH listening is by folks over 65, with 1/3 in 25-54.

Most of us who use ratings look at AQH share, rating and persons, not cume. Cumers don't buy anything from our clients.* People who are listening when a client's ad runs do.

AQH Fall 18-34 200 persons
AQH Fall 35-64 900 persons
AQH Fall 12+ 2800 persons

Thus, 65+ is 1,700 persons.

But if they buy stuff from your advertisers, that's a good business model for a station nobody thought could make it.

* Cume does not reflect average audience size, and in practical terms you can never reach all the cume unless you buy one ad every 15 minutes, or about 500 a week. It's nice to say "we have thirty thousand listeners. But the average ad will be heard by 2 to 3 thousand listeners, not the whole cume!

Again, i never gave a date - We will have a 4 share by the next Fall book. Quote that. Game on.

Game Over. By the next Fall Book, 15 percent of WECK'S audience will have expired of natural causes. At least WBEN now has company in the Grim Reaper Demos...
