Nielsen Ratings Week One

The national ratings for the season's first week are in
today's USA Today. Because I don't have Nielsen's
permission I can't print the numbers, but I can tell
you that CBS appears to have the season's three
breakout new shows: "2 Broke Girls," (4th out of 113
shows), "Unforgettable," (tied for 12th), and "Person Of
Interest" (tied for 15th); Fox scored well with "New
Girl" (33rd overall but 10th among ages 18-49) and
"The X Factor" (18th), even though "X Factor"
came nowhere close to touching "American Idol"'s ratings.
ABC is pleased with "Revenge" (35th) and "Pan Am" (26th),
but "Charlie's Angels" (42nd) is off to a so-so start,
while "Playboy Club" (65th) and "Free Agents" (83rd)
are in deep trouble on NBC, and every returning show on
the Peacock Network is down from a year ago. Other returning
shows: "The Middle" and "The Simpsons" had better opening weeks
than a year ago; "Grey's Anatomy" and "Desperate Housewives" each
fell about 25% over a year ago; "CSI," "The Good Wife," and "Harry's
Law" lost viewers on new nights. Especially noteworthy: nine of the
top ten shows among viewers 18-49 were sitcoms, a reversal of the
last few years, with special interest in Charlie Sheen-less "Two And A
Half Men."

Since most of these programs have just aired their second episodes it would be more valuable to compare week-to-week to ascertain potential hits/misses.

For example, "2 1/2 Men" had 28M viewers the first week as curiosity about Kutcher piqued interest. That show apparently bombed because only 20M tuned in week 2. Based upon comments in the media regarding dissatisfaction with Kutcher this show will continue to suffer major drops and be in trouble soon.

"Two Broke Girls" also dropped but continued to do OK in their target audience. I'm guessing even the Zooey Deschanel fans will opt out eventually as there are very few laughs here.

"X Factor" is nothing more than "American Idol 2.0" and hasn't come close to the ratings of its predecessor. It may hold on as mindless entertainment for the couch potatoes.

Bottom line so far - most of the returning shows are still popular and most of the new ones are still picking up curiosity viewers. We'll see some life jackets being tossed very quickly.

'Tuna- Zooey Deschanel stars in The New Girl. Two Broke Girls stars Kat Dennings on CBS. An understandable mistake given their similar titles and the fact that they both lack great writing (IMO).

Sorry.....that's what happens when "The Love of my Life" is yapp.....er, whispering in my ear while I type. ;D

Kutcher is merely playing an older version of Kelso on 2 1/2 Men

I didn't think he is acting at all. But then I never watched "70's Show". Maybe that's all he is able to do. I'm not watching further to find out.

I'd compare it to the schlock I see during my very infrequent tune-in's of SNL. High school grade.

I forgot.....

I like both Zooey and Kat but their shows are awful. The 18-34 nosepicker demo might keep them on for a while but I'm guessing they won't make a Season Two.

Surprised NBC's only show on the list is Sunday Night Football.

The network with the most shows listed is CBS which should be a given.

Networks don't care about household numbers. The only number they care about is the 18-49 demo. For the first time, Fox won the premiere week in that demo. X Factor was the primary reason for that win. The show does not have "American Idol" numbers...but no show does! Fox is very happy with X Factor. It was a hit in the first week and will be a huge success for Fox if it holds most if those ratings for its whole season.

Something I didn't mention but came as a complete shock;
in fact, I wondered if I was reading it right: "20/20" tied for
89th. The ABC newsmagazine never did that badly even in
the days when it faced its toughest competition: "Knots
Landing" and "Hill Street Blues" on Thursday nights back in
the '80s.

In fact, the first week's ratings made me wonder about something:
since 9/11, dramas have practically ruled primetime; now I see sitcoms
making an apparent comeback. It sort of makes me think about how
comedy-variety shows dominated radio during the Depression and World
War II. Are we as a nation ready to lighten up a little, despite the economy?
Or is it just a simple case of "what goes around, comes around"--remember how
sitcoms were pronounced dead in the early '80s, then Cosby came along and
suddenly there seemed to be little else but sitcoms?

The vast majority of shows would love "only" 20 million viewers.

Last Friday's "20/20" had only 3.3 million viewers,
and ABC programming from 8-10 PM (ET) consisted
of reruns of "Modern Family" (8-9) and "Revenge" (9-10).

But homerjay is right, and only three shows had at least
20 million viewers last week: "Two And A Half Men" (28.7
million), the Steelers-Colts game (20.4) and "NCIS" (20).
It is indeed an accomplishment to get 20 million viewers in
today's television environment.

20/20 has steadily gone down. Once it was must see Friday night and they had some
really interesting segments. Now, it's no thanks........as they just search for something
like who killed June Brown, the Tupperware saleslady in Bowling Green.

I quit watching them after they did a hatchet job on three-wheel ATV's. They completely lost any credibility with me after that.

20/20 used to be a good informative show, with a variety of different kinds of segments. Not 60 Minutes status, by any means, but still worth watching.

But lately it's just another one-hour single-story 'Crime-of-the-Week' show. Their new model appears to be Dateline NBC.

I was going to compare to "48 Hours", but in general I agree. The program has gone off the deep end since John Stosell left for News Corp.
