Nielsen Sells Music Division

Per several of the trades, Nielsen sold its music measurement and tracking to the publisher of Billboard.

For radio, the more important note is that BDS will again be part of the trade magazine that uses its data. And the streaming tracking will also be part of Billboard.

[SUB]"The purchase includes Nielsen’s Music Connect analytics platform and API that provides music streaming, airplay and sales data for artists, albums and songs; Broadcast Data Systems (BDS), which offers streaming, sales and airplay data at the national and local levels in the U.S. and Canada; and Music 360 music research and insights reports, which provide consumer trends impacting the industry."[/SUB]

This is one of those stories that might slip under the radar for some folks, but here's what it does: It now means that Billboard, not Nielsen owns the chart, and therefore can sell that data back to the record labels. Billboard thrives on information, and so do the labels, so this has the potential to create a powerful alliance between media and music.
