NIGHTS IN PROVIDENCE

Remember when nighttime radio meant a different breed of entertainer at top 40 and rock stations?
That's still the case but the different breed takes on a new meaning
Are nights considered one of the least important shifts?
PRO-FM: Austin voicetracked with breaks like"the music keeps on coming on PRO-FM"and sounding like Corny Collins in Hairspray.I hope he's a better stand up comic than dj.
HJY:The first time I heard Matt Battle on weekends I thought he was an intern.Guess not.Thank God the songs are long.Another off air person doing a shift that shouldn't be.Good example of how cost cutting benefits people who otherwise would be in the boonies.
Coast:Let's not go there
WCTK:Actually Adam Scott wins nights by default but besides that he does do a good job
B101:Tom St John voicetracked as always.Nothing else to say
Lite:Art Spencer doing what he has always done and probably what he should be doing
Hot:I can't really listen long to this station but they probably sound like they should at night although I must say the first screen on the website http://hot1063.com/ makes me want to avoid dark alleys.
All in all a pathetic time slot for the market

'Seems quaint now, that stations would TRY at night.
But once-upon-a-time...it was A RIVALRY.

Cue harp swirl...

"Big Ange streaks to WJAR, a new station in life," the ProJo ads read.
All-news WEAN had people (plural) in the newsroom at night.
WGNG played tunes @ 47RPM to sound brighter than we did.
Incumbent Pro-FM was TWEAKED.
Challenger JB105 gave away handsome T-shirts.
(I'd swap 'em for Doobie Brothers albums, to get 'em off the street.)
One night I took the 1000th caller...to win MOVIE TICKETS...and the winner CRIED.
One night, President Carter took calls.

Some advertisers BOUGHT evenings.

Now, stations seem to be on auto-pilot at night.

NO DISRESPECT INTENDED to the syndicated acts stations have substituted for local programming.
Michael Savage is clearly on-a-roll. We've got him on several stations I work with, and he resonates.
I know and respect Jerry Doyle, a true renaissance man; and gifted Joey Reynolds.
But shows like these air because they're free.
