"NIGHTSIDE" WITH DAN REA

Good choice ! Went to college with Dan. He is bright and articulate and mellowed with age.

Remember the days when he use to call Jerry Williams in the 60's on WBZ Radio on the same time slot he will now occupy and complain that there wasn't enough of a conservative viewpoint on radio. Danny was relentless and eventually I believe Jerry had him on his program.

As so, another student of Jerry Williams ascends the throne at the great power house, WBZ Radio.

Wear the crown well Danny. You worked hard to get it and unlike some who now have to resort to the courts for their future employment there is no blood on your hands.

Can't totally remember for sure but I believe Dan can be seen briefly in the films Reversal of Fortune
(Ron Silver as Alan Dershowitz, about the Claus Von Bulow case) and A Civil Action (yup
that's Howie as the Jerry-Williams-figure talk host, as John Travolta--most recently seen in
drag in "Hairspray"--plays Beverly-based attorny Jan Schlichtmann in the WR Grace case.)

I looked up both films; he's not credited in A Civil Action so I'm not sure whether or not he was
actually in it but he's def. in Reversal of Fortune.

Dan Rea ... Newscaster

My memory is a little sketchy, but I think Dan was a college member of Young Americans for Freedom, and Jerry Williams used to refer to him as "right-wing Danny." I never had the sense that Jerry liked him very much.

I'm not the only one to notice that "Nightside" is being used by someone else already. Bonneville.

http://www.SaveWRKO.com:

"WBZ has just announced its new evening talk show will be called "Nightside". One problem: Bonneville International already has a syndicated early evening talk show with the same name. No word on whether any legal steps have been taken to protect that name, but my guess is Bonneville might have something to say about this, since it intends to take the show nationwide and is already airing it in several major cities."

It's on WWWT in Washington DC and KSL in Salt lake City, to name two.

http://www.3wtradio.com
"The Nightside Project--1-3am News, information, and talk - delivered for and by Generation X and Y. Perspectives for the 20-something crowd."

It doesn't matter to me what the name of the show is...Dan Rea is a great choice to succeed Paul Sullivan and David Brudnoy. He is so tuned to what's going on and he has a great wit.

Actually, he succeeded me as President of the College Young Republicans [ I have since recovered ;). ] Danny may have gone on to be a YAF'er and a Goldwater supporter. And yes, Jerry was "annoyed" by Danny. Maybe, he got over it in time.

Right-wing Danny."
Yeah that's correct, because as Jerry used to say, Dan incorrectly id'd Hitler as a Left-winger and Adolf was of course fiercely anti-communist.

Obviously I think it's a great choice and I think Dan had a part-time job at BZr (or am I thinking of Dick Stockton?) a generation ago.

I just hope he stays away from Keller, on the air anyway. Jon is one of those guys who have cachet even though nobody really can figure out why, because he's so often wrong.

Best of luck to Dan!!

I listened for a while last night and Dan sounds quite worthy of filling that esteemed chair at WBZ. Very smooth, professional, and refreshingly open to conversation. It's nice to see a class act like Dan Rea get an opportunity to share his talents with the rest of us.

Well, Jerry could well have been wrong on that. Being anti-communist doesn't automatically make someone a right-winger (Hitler viewed communism as a competitor, not as an altogether alien philosophy.) It was (maybe still is) a common college modern history lesson to have the same people argue both sides of the question on different days. It's pretty easy, too. If you read the Nazi Manifesto, which was Hitler's political platform, it reads like a Berkeley professor's wet dream, with a hatred of capitalism, redistributionist economic policy, confiscation of private property, confiscatory taxation for certain industries, etc, etc. You could read portions of it at a MoveOn rally and get a standing O.

Personally, I think it's a tough call, since Hitler was, above all else, an opportunist who was glad to hop on any train of thought the public was buying into, on the left or the right.

Regards,
TSB
