Nik Carter on FREE FM

Nik Carter should be doing a talk show on Free FM. Back when he was up against Opie and Anthony, ten years ago, he actually beat them. And I think segments like "Advice from the Hood" and "Caught Masterbating" are alot more entertaining and relavant to and Urban market like New York City than Jim Norton and Anthony making whale noises when talking about some fat celebrity. And everyone loves "Bi-Day."

Nik Carter took hot talk in the right direction when given the chance, and he very well could be the savior for the joke of a station he does weekend shifts for now.

I thought he did a solid enough week based on what I heard of it. Considering he was following basketball games a couple of nights so he could'nt really establish a rhythm.

I've listened to Nik for years and agree that he can pull off whatever type of show he wants to do. He's that talented. I'm sure there'll be some detractors to my opinion, but that's how it goes.

and the other point about Nik Carter that goes unoticed, mostly due to the fact that he speaks standard american english on the radio, is that Nik carter is a minority. Now, in majority minority city, possibly majority minorty market, maybe it makes sense for an articulate, provacative, entertaining minority, with obvious majority appeal, it seems like a slam dunk to anchor your programming around him.

Interesting point you've made Brooklyn and Im sure that in the current climate that we're in there are those who might take issue with you mentioning that an African American essentially "speaks good ebglish" just like poor Joe Biden tried to compliment Obama by referring to him as "articulate and clean", no harm was meant there either. So before anyone even brings it up I wanted you to know that I have your back on this post and know that you were not trying to make any negative statement but rather a sort of compliment which in the current climate can be so easily perverted into something it was not meant to be.

Carter is a strange bird because you're right he does speak standard english but will drop ebonics in at the drop of a hat but seems to know that it's wrong and almost character-ish. I've never heard someone who quotes Niztche one break, Tupac in another break while talking about say Tool. I think to listeners that comes across as either the greatest form of genius or something like " this guy is weird and annoying". I always love talent that strikes you as either fantastic or horrible>

;D

Honestly, Nik Carter sounds like wierdo when talking about music. But that same qualities which make him a wierd and quirky op, also make him intelligent, positive, and provocative radio personality. I think could easily pull off a Michael Baisden-like show, urban, but with obvious, and proven, universal appeal.

On another note, Free-FM needs to ditch the last vestiges of its "rockstar" imaging. Free-FM should be doing all it can to make itself accessable to the now-30ish hip-hop generation. Maybe Free-FM should negociate and option to pick up DJ Star and have him do mornings when his contract is up. Maybe Free FM should be playing rap on the weekends instead of rock (and believe me it kills me to say it because New York has no rock stations). Maybe Free Fm should relaunch its imaging campaign to explain why Free talk radio is better than paying $25 a month for satelitte. Maybe Free Fm should do alot of things, and obviously change costs money, but moving the Notorious NIK from weekends to afternoons would be cheap and easy - and more importantly, a step in the right direction as far as demographics go.

And to answer the Joe Biden comment you think I madehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_American_English, I didn't say good english, because good is a qualitative term and I wasn't passing judgement, I said standard american englsih, a dialect also known as "broadcast english." As opposed to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American_Vernacular_English which is obviously associated with African Americans. I realize that just because someone happenes to be African Americna doesn't mean they speak African American Vernaular English, and I'm sure hundreds of thousands in New York speak Standard English as well, which adds to nik Carter's appeal.

When has Jim Norton and Anthony Cumia ever made a "Whale noise"? Nik Carter beat O&A back in Boston because O/A were on a bad signal WAAF, and Carter could be heard loud and clear on WBCN. That said, I like Nik Carter and I wish he was back in Boston.

Nik was great in Boston. From when I've streamed Free FM, it was only to hear his show, and he was impressive again.

On a side note, Brooklyndon, I have to disagree with your suggestion for Free FM to go rap or any type of urban. It seems any time a station is faltering, you jump on board and suggest a rap format which is just, at this time, almost unreasonable. I've seen it on a few different boards and I'm not slandering your taste but inviting you to open up to what else is available.

Actually there have been many blurred facts about that situation in Boston. As Nik has told it in trades etc Opie and Anthony to their credit were definately on a bad stick on waaf yet were beating wbcn decisively and then legend Mark Parenteau. Nik was moved to afternoons becuase of that and in one book cut the O and A lead to within about a half a point and then they pulled the dead mayor stunt and were flushed. So in total the two shows only competed for some five months, not even two full books. O and A deserve their credit for being number one of a stick that very few in the Boston metro even could hear. Then again when do the books ever end up in the metro?. When do diaries actually end up in Manhattan for example?. The tapes of them going back and forth at each other are actually uncomfortable to listen to they were so vicious at times!. :)

I understand the potential frustration with my imagining suggestion, but, judging only from the lack of noise about their failing on this forum, it seems as if Hot 97 and Power 105 do well in their demos. Their was always noise about K-Rock. The frat boy metal image just doesn't work in New York/New Jersey anymore, and really hasn't since at least the end of the 90s. DJ Star essentially did a talk show and got great rating through universal appeal, even though the station he was on was hip-hop imaged. I guess th epoint I'm trying to make, is that hip-hop imaging won't scare away what little base you have already taking part in the frat-boy imagining, but it will intrigue about 6 of the 8 million potential listeners living in your urban core.
