Nik Rivers named WBUF brand manager

Reported by RAMP which says the formal announcement is coming…he starts Oct. 11.

No small exaggeration to believe that was some consideration. But Rivers had a good rep in the building and did a decent job with the station formerly known as Alt 107-7. He's familiar with the market, knows the landscape, won't ever be heard talking about "eating a Michigan at Ted's," and he was on the beach, so why not hire the guy. At least now he has a signal to work with. WBUF has morphed into "the new generation of classic rock" brand. TSM more than ever is positioning it between 97 Rock and the Edge. Older Classic Rock guys may think it plays too much new stuff, and Active Rock guys may think it plays too much music their fathers listened to, mixed with the artists/songs they used to listen to when they themselves were younger.

What a compelling reason for this hire. He was out of work and in Buffalo. Alternative Buffalo never hit a 2 share during his time as PD and you blame the signal. Did they hire him to flip WBUF to Alternative? Does he have experience with Classic Rock or does it even matter? WBUF doesn't play ANY new stuff unless people in Buffalo think it's 1997.

A search of "Michigan" shows that in the Finger Lakes and Northern NY, that name is used for hot dogs. WBUF is just a dead dog...

Apparently he knows how to voice-track. He has experience with the myriad duties and responsibilities of a modern "Brand Manager." He knows how to create digital content. He knows how to build and execute clocks so the Beer & Wings boys don't bump into the local spots. Maybe he'll hire tbolt as a consultant to help him with the music library.

You left out that Townsquare was desperate for a body and he was desperate for a gig. Yep, no moving expenses needed. Why not hire your pal that got axed at 97 Rock? He's a veteran Classic Rock PD. Of course, he probably expected a salary.

It's funny how you talk about "Live & Local" being superior. You don't mind that WBUF will voice track its afternoon drive show. As long as he can "Tweet" about Freebird coming up next, he's a Digital Brand Expert...

You'd be surprised if you knew who in this forum is competent to speak on matters in radio if their identity was revealed. I'd change your tune about your 'tude.

Nik did a good job handling the programming on the HD2 format of The Lake after John Anthonys departure by incorporating a lot of new music by some relevant contemporary musicians... However from my experience, he's not really a nice or cordial person. He did very little if anything at all to advance the Alternative Format. Plus his Spotify Playlist of Yacht Rock music is boring and sounds like what they play on Sirius / XM's The Bridge. Going to say not really a big pickup for WBUF here.
 
Perhaps Nik was annoyed by the continuous assault by Lake advocates on the format he was hired to execute. Entercom chose to put an alternative format designed to appeal to listeners 40 years younger than the alternative rock format of The Lake. Some old people didn't apparently didn't like that.

TSM is a very top-down company these days, focused on digital. It appears he knows how to execute what they want to do. Nobody they hire is going to be in a position to change corporate's format decision or use of syndicated and VT shows. Might they have some influence? Maybe, but that about as far as it goes. Do I agree with what they've done with WBUF? Not so much, but it ain't my station or my money involved.

If that is the case, it doesn't make the constant negativity any more acceptable. Thread after thread, we have the non-stop bashing and complaining from tbolt and yourself because of a format that died 10 years ago. You're welcome to have an opinion, it's just annoying to see the same tired argument happen on every thread.

How do you know he reads this forum? Time to get a thick skin if you're in the Radio game. ALT Buffalo never had ratings success, so pick a different metric for all that winning. It wasn't generating revenue either.

Who said anything about winning? And let's hear some revenue numbers since you're "in the know."

Who's programming "The Wolf"? Here's a hint - it's not a new hire. It's another chore for an existing programmer (at least so far). So Audacy saved another salary. If they bring a separate "brand manager" onboard they'll likely pull an air shift and wear several other hats as well. And, unlink someone who's been there for several years, they'll start for a lot less money.

Meanwhile, Rivers gets to avoid moving and likely takes a pay cut to stay in a market he's familiar with. TSM gets to hire somebody who's familiar with the market and will work for what they're willing to pay. He's familiar with the era of music they're looking to try to wedge into the perceived gap between 97-Rock and The Edge. At least this time he's got a big signal to work with. I still don't expect WBUF to do serious business, but I don't have the same crystal ball that you have. Maybe it will meet their expectations which are focused on digital, not necessarily OTA. Time will tell.
