NINE is crap - WKIE should be ENERGY

Everyone bags out NINE, especially the last few weeks with the repetition of songs.

It's logical, it makes sense & everyone is asking for it - Bring Back ENERGY!!!

There's an obvious hole in the market for this station & it's sorely missed so why doesn't anyone listen & return it to the air???

Also WKIE rated a lot better than NINE ever has!!!

Nine is defenitely an interesting station. Not necessarily all good. I do enjoy some of the songs that pop up on there, stuff you really wouldn't hear anywhere else. But they make some questionable decisions. I used to do traffic for them before they dumped it altogether. That was questionable, but also strange was the way they did traffic before its demise. From a technical standpoint it was a TON of work and the reports aired about 15 minutes after they were recorded. While I do appreciate the fact that they are not owned by "the man", I am not quite sure they know what they are doing over there. The morning show is so strange now. And even though there are only 60 seconds of commercials at a time, it feels like they are always at a commercial break. Maybe my timing just sucks.

While you're at it...Bring back the BLAZE.....higher ratings than both of em!

It is funny that The Blaze is mentioned... I know the zone did not do so hot as an active rocker, but that was the fought of ABC for tweaking the format every 5 minutes.... I could see IF and that is a big IF programmed right a Blaze type format would work pretty good on 92.5 since you have NIU right there in DEK's back door... At one time I was very pumped about NINE, but now that has gone away and from the looks at the ratings so have a lot of other people... As for Energy the closest thing you will get is Dance Factory... I just can't see Harv and CO putting up the kind of money it would take to pull off a dance format like Energy... For that to work you need street presence and a lot of promotions and that is something I just don't or more importantly see happening... I think it is time for Newsweb to go back to the drawing board and try something different and not a format of the month... Try something different that will give them some sort of a return investment... Right now WCPT is their ratings leader!!! They need to look at why an AM is out preforming three FM's that should be getting at least a 1.0 or higher... Remember Energy did not set the world on fire with the ratings IE 12+, but the audience they had was very loyal which is something NINE does not have... Look at Movin out in Seattle it has taken that city by storm and is doing pretty decent where it counts "The Money Demo". Nobody knew what its owners had up its sleeve, but it put new life into that station... That is what Harv and CO need to do with their FM cluster... Take a chance and try something that nobody else has done... Lay a foundation on a format that has never been done, build on it and when it is ready for prime time promote the hell out of it... Now back to our scheduled programming :). CC1

The Energy format probably would not work on these stations. It would take a signal that penetrates into the city of Chicago to make the difference. I wonder if a "Blaze" format would work in today's marketplace. The amount of new music which would fit that format (such as when 103.5 was doing it) has declined over the years. We seem to forget that the Blaze format was in its hey day 10 years+ ago.

Nine-FM needs to do something to make those stations work. Something that would work within the range of their signals while serving a niche market.

Nobody asked, but I'd suggest a total revamp and go after the seniors market. Yep, 65+. WGN is vulnerable, and continues to go younger with their programming changes. A few shows featuring Big Band music, and others with talk and information related to health care and transportation. Perhaps some nostalgia shows on the weekends. This would reach the seniors located in the north, west, and south suburbs, and bring them something they don't get anywhere else. Advertisers, such as local retailers offering senior discounts, health care organizations, medical equipment manufacturers, vacation and travel related, and nostaglia items, would have an outlet.

For now, if a station played anything, but nobody heard it, would it still matter?

We'll see if the "Energy" format at night makes a difference. I'm standing by my earlier point that the demographics that would enjoy this format are not located where these Nine-FM signals are strong.

But being the lead story in Feder's column today in the Sun-Times makes the announcement worthwhile, since there no longer seems to be an advertising budget for these stations. This brings them their 15 minutes of fame at no cost.

Please buy an IPOD....filol it with dance and let ENERGY go. She's gone and will NEVER come back...EVER!!!!

Everyone is so quick to write off dance. Dance is as much a part of Chicago culture as deep-dish pizza, the Blues, or Lake Shore Drive. This format CAN work, and on the signals they are working with. Contrary to popular belief, ENERGY actually fared OK given their limited reach into the city. I forecast that Dance Factory will at least do better than NINE's current stale offerings.

But, I digress...there is one, large part of the equation no one ever seems to mention, and that is WDEK. It covers one of the largest concentrations of the Dance-listening demo in the area. 25-54 does not listen much to dance, but there are approximately 25,000 college students living in DeKalb, the vast majority of whom come out to the suburbs (or city) to clubs and to "party" on the weekends. Even among their suburban friends, word will probably spread quickly. This cannot be ignored. It appears maybe Newsweb finally realized what many people knew all along. Dance Factory listeners are predominantly suburban club-goers anyway, city signal be damned!

Obviously, Fred doesn't care too much about showing up in the books anyway, or the stations would have flipped or been sold by now. It's all about billing, and this move can only strengthen the bottom line, hands down. It can't hurt, and I, for one, applaud the move.

As for filling IPODs with dance, that is great for some, but to many people the Dance/Club culture is their identity. There are more of these young folks than most "insiders" would have you believe, and the majority of them are spending a LOT of money in clubs. They want to hear people like them, with their same interests and ideals, on the air spinning their music. Anyone who can properly (see: Energy) execute the format is going to make money. Energy didn't die because they were failing, Energy died because of corporate mismanagement.

Let's hope for something better, rather than predicting imminent failure.
