Nine pirates busted in Boston!

A pirate in our area has begun runnings ads. I caught a Toyota ad this morning, with a fraction of an ad before it. Why don’t these folks just run an online station, then get friendly with the local newspapers and promote it that way? Of course, that means paying for the privilege of airing music.
Possibly playing music off youtube and there are pre roll ads (unless you pay for Premium)

I thought that or YouTube music at first, but a couple of weeks ago, it featured a local bluegrass gospel show that my former high school station aired for years. I do not know if they are still airing that show.

Except Rosa didn't take a seat that was being occupied by someone else, or sit across two or three seats.
Just the facts. Like Rosa Parks seat, the one used by his unlicensed station was unoccupied at the time. Touch 106.1 was removed from the air to make way for a new translator on the same frequency with the same power in the same area.

Charles was protesting the lack of black ownership in American broadcasting. And, the negative stereotypes of black men and women being presented in music and media.

I wanted to help him in getting a license.

Today there is no more room for LPFM's or translators in large cities. That means pirate stations are stepping on someone now days.

Every frequency is occupied. Just a question of how close, how much and who decides.

Clemons thought he was the decider.

I wanted to help him in getting a license.

But Clemons blew his opportunity. While others were being awarded licenses, he did nothing.

He a) broke laws which made him ineligible and b.) never even tried to file for a LPFM.

Hold on! It was congress, not the FCC who forced the Commission to throw out just about all applications for LPFM's in major cities in the USA during the first filing window. 106.1 was open for a translator but not LPFM.

I guess Clemmons blew his chance to operate an LPFM in rural Kentucky. The only way he could have been licensed in Boston is if he had been born with a big silver spoon in his mouth.

Radio Broadcasting Preservation Act of 2000. Of course this also screwed the AM stations who want Class A1 status for their translators. Going to congress took this authority to change the rules away from the FCC in the matter of LPFM and translators.

So, that's what you get when you have lobbied politicians make radio rules instead of the Federal Communications Commission.

Radio Broadcasting Preservation Act of 2000.
Where in the Broadcasting Preservation or 2000 act does it "blackball Clemons"?

No, this is what you get when elected accountable representatives of the people make the laws, instead of nameless faceless bureaucrats.

What “act of congress” blackballed him? What bill # ?

.

Plenty. He could have been one of them

Instead, he did nothing and now has nothing, A result of his own sense of privilege and ego
From what I can see, it looks like he refuses to take responsibility for his own bad decisions. ("sour grapes.") I also see that 106.1 is now in use by a licensed station in Boston. Had he gone legit, he might still be on the air. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

@fybush - Going back 30 years what was WILD-AM 1090 offered for a nighttime signal in terms of wattage? I have to assume it was the same that Bob was given with WJIB-AM - 5 watts.

5 watts would be useless covering Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan from Medford but this was long before FM translators became a thing.

Living in Cambridge I take a lot of Uber/Lyfts and yes taxis and I hear the Haitian pirates often in those vehicles.

Over the years we have seen some pirate stations accepted as mainstream by local politicians. Is there a fix? Maybe.

In theory, the corporate clusters in Boston could offer the mainstream pirates a legitimate legal home on HD2 or HD3 channels for a reasonable fee and make it clear they would have to follow FCC guidelines. Most cars with radios can access those channels and people at home can connect with the internet or a smart speaker.

Reports are that when caught, Pirate #1 was quoted as saying: "ARRGH!"
Pirate #2 said: "WELL SHIVER ME TIMBERS!"
Pirate #3 said: "AVAST!"
Pirate #4 said: "STAY AWAY FROM ME BOOTY!"
Pirate #5 said: "WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH MY BOUNTY OF LISTENERS?"
Pirate #6 said: "MAY YOU BE CURSED TO THE BRINEY DEEP..ARGH!"
Pirate #7 said: "WELL BLOW ME DOWN, THE FEDS CAUGHT ME!"
Pirate #8 said: "HORNSWAGGLED!"
And finally, Pirate #9 was heard to have said:
"IF I WAS YOUR CAPTAIN, YOU'D BE WALKING THE PLANK!"
