Nirvana On Mix 1065

Now first let me say that in my opinion Mix 1065 has sounded better than ever over the past month or so. I find myself tuning in more and more and hearing songs that I haven't heard in ages during their wide open weekends and even during the regular week. The variety has really been stepped up and its becoming a very fun station to listen to.

That being said, I almost drove my car off the road yesterday when I heard the opening riff to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" yesterday during the 90s at 9. Not that I minded hearing the song...I'm a huge fan of the rock...it just sounded a bit out of place on Mix. Yes, I realize that it was one of the biggest songs of the 90s, but it seems to me that its a song that belongs strictly on rock radio, not on an AC station. I applaud Mix for being willing to step out of the box, but what's next....Enter Sandman by Metallica??

Thoughts and opinions on the future musical direction of Mix??

Mix now means "variety" - without the "Jack..."

I've caught more of WMVX in the past few weeks. Haven't heard Nirvana yet, but I believe you ;)

To me, it sure sounds as if Mix is slowly becoming hi"Jack"-ed - only without the one name imaging or "Whatever" positioners. CC probably wants to neuter any momentum that any true "Jack" station to ever come to Cleveland (here we go AGAIN ;) will have, if ever.

Of course, CC also probably wants to revamp Mix's state in the market. Currently Mix is among the weaker links in the CC chain, but at this rate, that can't be said for long...

I concur on Mix's less restrained playlist. It makes me want to stick with the station more than I normally would. The one question: does this evolution at Mix risk treading too closely at WMJI?

Maybe I'm overly cautious...

How does playing Nirvana impact WMJI? Or do you mean WMMS? And even then it's not like WMVX is going "rock". Nirvana is a gold to most active rocks. Some out of the box jurassic rocks are playing it as well.

Playing Nirvana, during a specialty show, lends to the "variety" factor for the station. When MIX first signed on it played American Pie and Sgt. Pepper's too. Didn't hurt WMJI. If any station is "Untouchable", it's Majic...as long as Lanigan is there.

Still powerful, yes. Untouchable....not really anymore. WDOK won #1 25-54 total week more than once over the past couple of years, and MJI is not nearly as dominant 25-54 in the dayparts and weekends as they used to be. I have not seen the new book, but in the Winter book DOK was #1 25-54 midday, and WTAM was #1 25-54 afternoon drive. Lately, if MJI wins a 25-54 time period, they usually just make it by one or two-tenths of a point and then lose it in the next book. In the mid and late 1990s, MJI used to win total week 25-54, 25-54 mid day, 25-54 afternoon drive and 25-54 weekends book after book and with usually a comfortable lead. Lanigan has always been big, but right now he's driving more of the total-week number than ever before and when he departs....look out!

Oh, I remember. I was there (94-00) when WMJI had a run of 25 consecutive #1 25-54 books. Ahhhhh, the "good old daze".

Yeah, that question was pretty weak. My bad. I was only referring to WMVX's adding of more 70's songs onto their 80's/90's/00's rotation; while WMJI's focus, as with other oldies stations, has evolved to the 60's/70's. But it didn't come out right.

Oh, and I have no doubt that WMJI will soon play Nirvana. Just wait until 2035... ;)
