Nirvana on WAXQ's website

http://www.q1043.com/cc-common/inconcert/nirvana/
(Yawn)

Hardly a shocker.

I think the choice of Nirvana as the band to use open up the alternative Genre is weak. Nirvana never really had that classic rock or even pretenders/blondie style new wave sound. Soundgarden or Alice in Chains, Mad Season perhaps, would be the best way to start adding Seattle to the playlist while still maintaining the truck driving, football wtching, classic rock listening core audience.

if they are hellbent on playing Nirvan though, which is a dumb idea because of how seemlesslyell smashing pumpkings, alice in chains, and soundgarden fit the classic rock sound, then they better stick to the unplugged album, becasue every other song will scare off the eagles fans.

As somebody brought up on Alternative/Modern rock music, I'm not particularly thrilled by a classic rock outlet like the Q embracing them either because the band in its inception was basically ignored by AOR radio (and classic rock is basically classic AOR), and because Nirvana was the quintessential "alternative" act (more so than Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains) because they were signed by a major label with the anticipation that they would sell very little and could be used as a tax write-off later on (how wrong they were!).

When you sell millions of records, you are hardly 'alternative" anymore. Some of the above comments make little sense. Those other bands you mention never sold anywhere near the amount of "records" that Nirvana did. Nirvana got tons of press for obvious reasons. Soundgarden and Alice in Chains each had one or two songs that crossed over to mainstream rock radio (I mean semi-hits), while "Pumpkins" may have had a few more. Nirvana- contrary to the lame comment about the Eagles- had/have at least 4 songs that even 30 and 40 somethings would recognize. How old is the person who ripped the Eagles? I just want to make sure I'm not responding to someone who is 11 years old. This reminds me of the old argument when people used to say bands were "too commercial". If you're not commercial, you break up and go back to your regular day job.

Alice In Chains and Soundgarden had "one or two" songs that crossed over to mainstream rock radio? Hmmm, last's have a little history lesson, shall we.

Off the top of my head, Alice In Chains had the following big radio tracks: Man In The Box, Them Bones, Rooster, Down In A Hole, Would, Damn That River, No Excuses, Heaven Beside You, Over Now, Again. That's even leaving off a few singles that didn't fair as well.

Soundarden, maybe a little less but still you have Spoonman, Black Hole Sun, Fell On Black Days, My Wave, Pretty Noose, Burden In My Hand, Blow Up The Outside World, Outshined. Soundgarden and AIC belong on classic rock outlets way more than Nirvana does because the fit the AOR standards better.

Ok, maybe I should have said 3 or 4 songs instead of one or two. I did say "mainstream"...and I'll stand by my statement. Some of the songs you name weren't *that* big. I'll go song-by-song if you like, but that may be boring. The grunge era was just as laughable as some find the "hair band" era. Many of those depressed unwashed-looking, jeans/plaid-wearing musicians are gone--and mostly forgotten. I always wondered why these bands always looked so unhappy--while they were atttaining wealth and notoriety. Let me spell it out--more people are aware of Nirvana (than Alice and Soundgarden) because of Cobain's death. It is kinda funny that the mid-90s rock is largely ignored on radio. I will agree that Q could play "Rooster", "No Excuses", "Man in the Box", "Spoonman", and 'Black Hole Sun" and at some point they probably will add one or two of those. But remember, when you are a fan of a certain genre of music, you might think it's more popular than it may really be.

Any "rock" fan, classic or otherwise who is scared off by Nirvana ought to permanently tune to Lite FM or WPLJ. I look forward to Q104 playing "Territorial Pissings".

sorry bout the Eagles burn. Woo-oo witchy woman is one of my favorite songs of all time.

We went through this in Boston just over a decade ago when WBCN, which was playing the Eagles, Mac, Zep, Who, Floyd, Jimi, Elton John, etc. and avoiding Cobain, Vedder, Weiland, Durvitz (Counting Crows), Corgan, etc. in fear of a massive demo suicide, suddenly dumped the classics in late 1995/early 1996 in favor of the newer rock. Now of course 'BCN is back to playing the Eagles, Mac, Zep, Who, Floyd, Jimi and Elton John along with the modern stuff (why?).

I'm not sure that the 25-54s at 'AXQ will suffer - the Nirvana/Pearl Jam/STP/Soundgarden/Smashing Pumpkins/Counting Crows fans are in that demo, and if I'm correct it's better to have an overload of 25-34s than one of 45-54s. (BTW, I turn 45 this August.) ;D

WAXQ has been playing Nirvana for a while, along with Pearl Jam and STP. I hardly see how this is so shocking. And I think that all of the big grunge bands have earned their place on classic rock radio.
