NIU coverage on radio...

Hey I live in the Quad-Cities now, and was wondering how the Chicago radio media covered the NIU shootings.

Did WDEK (now Nine FM) break in and do some coverage, or is that expecting too much since they are really not in the area anymore? How about B95 in DeKalb? Did they break in? I imagine they probably did.

I saw the pictures on the tv from WLS, did a lot of stations break in? Lets talk about this please!

The Chicago AM's like WBBM, WGN, and WLS were on it. WBBM had continuing coverage for a couple of hours after the shooting. Don't know about the FM's.

B95 did very frequent updates, but did not pre-empt all programming. As far as I know 9FM didn't do anything.

All the Chicago TV stations went wall-to-wall for a couple of hours. As I understand Fox Chicago waited quite a while, but all of them covered it.

Well, I am painfully and very sad and hate to really say this to you all.
It seems to me that the news media will always make a circus out of a mole-hill!
You tell me, How many times within the last past year there's been a bunch of school hootings ?
Too many times! Right?

To me, this is nothing new at all, History will always repeat itself because is the same old damn
thing over and over again! I just sick and tired of hearing these depressing news.
And again there will be more school shootings, and the worst is yet to come.

believe me, there are lots of crazy sick minded people out there waiting behind the curtians
just to make it famous in the news media, just like the old days when the billboards charts were
big back then, at a time were the artist or a rock group used to be number one in the top ten
charts of the rock n roll era....

I had trouble following your rambling, rather disjoined message...but, are you suggesting the murders of five young people on a college campus is not news?

And, that the news media should not cover these murders...because it has happened before and will happen again?

If that's what you're implying, I respectfully disagree.

Steve:

While, in deed, this is news and it should be covered. I think, there is a point of over coverage. This is a tragedy. Sadly, often times, some reporters fail to see the depth of the story but rather only the headline (you know, "film at 11").

As this story is unrolling, we are seeing many sides. The loss of lives too soon, the emptiness of families who looses a loved one and in whom they saw their reason for being, the confusion of teachers for a student thought to be a strong contributor, a girl friend mourning the loss of her constant companion who is now seen a mass murderer, the parents of other students at other schools fearing what might happen. It goes on and on. I'm not too sure many of today's reporters truly understand the depth of this loss.

Cover the story, yes, but I am hoping we will also see some perspective.

Steve, I'm deeply sorry to be so negitive with my opinion on this, and yes these kind of things with high shool shootings and these murders and criminals should be covered in the news media, but what i was trying to say is; and maybe you might have an answere to my question: Why does the same news story have to go on and on for? couldn't the news media just could end that news topic and go on to somthing else? rather than hearing the same news topic day in and day out?

Pardon my expression, at times I just turn the news off, because it get so board and aggravated listening to the same stuff over and over! To me, these same old news stories gets kind of stale after awhile, with it's on going stories....

I aggree with you 100% and I couldn't say it more better than you.

Of all the coverage I heard that day, and night, WGN did the best job and probably the most valuable part of their coverage was giving people a chance to talk on the air about what they had seen or heard. All the grief counsellors I've ever heard on this topic say the worst thing to do is hide and pretend it will go away. WGN and their hosts did a superb job of allowing this to happen with great sensitivity. Thousands of people who were touched by this horrible event were given a chance to express their feelings.
