NJ-101.5 goes into Hurricane Mode 48-Hours Before the Storm!

If the hurricane follows the currently predicted track, this will be a weekend for local news and talk radio to shine, especially if New Jerseyans find themselves without power, Internet or TV. So, it will be a chance for NJ-101.5 to show its stuff, and its recently returned PM drive stars to a much bigger audience than usual and possibly gain new regular listeners.

Listening Thursday night, NJ-101.5 was already into "emergency" mode taking calls on what listeners were doing in terms of storm preparation. I was listening in the car on the far northeastern edge of their signal, near Upper Montclair, and when I was leaving a Shoprite, after buying a snack, a guy just entering the store asked me if it was "nuts" in there, with empty shelves and huge crowds at the checkout. I said "nothing like you would expect listening to NJ-101.5." He laughed, smiled and said he had listened too and thought the current situation was being overblown on the radio, at least where we were.

I think it's great that the station keeps people well informed and that they are encouraged to prepare for the worst, but we still had two days to go before the storm and on the radio it sounded like some people were starting to panic.

It reminded me of the time I got screamed and yelled at by the fish manager of a Central Jersey Shoprite. It had just started to snow outside, and this fish guy was almost losing control of himself because the store was not being closed and he would have to drive home ten miles in the snow when his shift was up a couple of hours later. The guy blamed me and others like me who would venture out once it started snowing to get something they suddenly needed. He told me his wife kept calling him because NJ-101.5 kept saying that "a state of emergency had been declared in New Jersey" and I wasn't paying attention to NJ-101.5. You would have thought the radio station should be the final arbiter of all business decisions. I paid attention and it was several hours later before there would be any problems with driving locally, it was a Sunday and the roads had been pre-salted, most of the snow came late overnight.

Tonight (Thursday) the calls I heard on NJ-101.5, from places in their core listening area told of Wal-Marts out of bottled water, milk, bread etc. and of shoppers crowding the aisles. But, the storm is still two days away and not expected to hit Central Jersey until 6-pm Saturday. Stores will get bread and milk deliveries on Friday and Saturday, and will also have time to re-stock with bottled water. No reason to get all cranked up yet.

What was interesting was that the situation sounded more panicked in NJ-101.5s main signal area, than it was farther north where most other media is the same. I wonder if NJ-101.5 going into storm mode had anything to do with the geographical difference in mood?

I'm not saying it would be a bad thing if one station had that much influence in getting people to prepare early, but I wonder if hyping the crisis mode too early and too heavy is the right thing to do? The hurricane is certainly what New Jerseyans will be talking about for the next three or four days, so the station should talk about it. And there were some great tips given on what people should do to prepare for the storm, but two days out some callers sounded more cranked up than normal when we all still have plenty of time to do what really needs to be done before battering down the hatches at home. While getting people out of low lying flood prone areas, and off of barrier islands early makes a whole lot of sense, having everybody else rush out and hoard a months worth of bottled water, just in case, is overdoing it a bit. Yes, a state of emergency has already been declared, but really, are we in a dangerous situation yet?

No doubt, a Hurricane is more serious than a snowstorm, but can a talk station pass along all the necessary storm related information without getting too many New Jerseyans to react like they did when Orson Welles had the Martians landing in Grover's Mills with his War of the Worlds radio drama in 1938? You'll recall that response was a little overdone too.

They are doing exactly what they SHOULD be doing. Other stations had better follow their lead, or they will be left in the dust. Trust me on this one. They ARE the New Jersey station. And when there is a potentially horrible storm coming, this is the mode they MUST be in.
Essential. Immediate...and holding a mirror to the audience with their reactions. They should be telling people not to panic perhaps, but this is what a REAL radio station that has 21+ years of image and reliabilty does. BE BIG!

Exactly Jay...some people are treating this like it is going to be a noreaster. Imagine everyone on Friday night and Saturday morning first getting ready. This is what NJ101.5 does best for NJ listeners. If for some reason...which it won't...the storm takes an extreme easterly direction and all of this was done for nothing..it still makes sense to prepare early enough. Early preparation avoids panick.

For New Jersey they are doing a great job. Its smart to them to drop music at 2pm sat for the news. Also adding 97.3 which would make perfect sense for 101.5 format anyway, it is good for south jersey.Furthermore speaking of south jersey hurricane radio coverage Longport Media stations wond, wmgm, wwac and wbss/wgym stations are all broadcasting live and local too.

Sounds like NJ-101.5 is on top of what's going on and providing the programming listeners expect from their 'go-to' news-talk weather and information station. It's also what we do in Buffalo in winter (September through May... I keed) when the lake effect begins and the wind rolls off the lake at 30 mph (or more) with half a foot of snow thrown into the mix. The key is to have lots of manpower and sound like you have everything under control. Any word as to what are the coastal stations around Asbury Park, Atlantic City and Cape May are doing? Stay safe and be well.

WIBBAGE FM @ 94.3 and WIBG1020 FULL HURRICANE COVERAGE

Live breaks at least 5 times per hour, and extensive street
reporting. Live and local without losing the format to simple
chatter.. Just the facts from the people making the local news.

I have friends and family in the NJ101.5 listening area and I can't be there with them today. NJ101.5 is doing exactly what I need them to do. They are giving me good information and taking calls from listeners regarding conditions in their area.

This is a big reason why I consider MedianJ's rants to be complete nonsense.

Listening when I could over the past several days, NJ-101.5 was doing its usual great job of keeping New Jerseyans informed on what to do, and what was going on related to the storm around the state.

Especially for those without electricity, it is the only near statewide source of immediate news and information.

And for me, listening to some of the callers was a reminder that some people have a difficult time "getting it." The radio station doesn't necessarily have to be hyping things for some listeners to go into overdrive in their response. I thought the tone taken by the hosts I heard was perfectly appropriate.

To follow up on the post that I started this thread with: On Friday, I was again at the extreme Northeastern edge of the NJ-101.5 signal, listening to Deminski and Doyle alternating with WPDH in Poughkeepsie, NY which was dominating the frequency 101.5.

While I was still hearing about crowded stores sold out of water, batteries, milk and bread, and gas stations with no gas or long lines, I went to two always busy supermarkets, bought the same milk and bread I normally buy and did not even have to wait on a cashier line. I checked and the store also had plenty of batteries and bottled water. I also was able to fill up the tank with regular for $3.35 a gallon, with no wait for a pump.

For whatever reason, and possibly I was just lucky late Friday afternoon, but the sense of urgency in that particular part of the state was quite different than what I was hearing on the radio from the shore and Central Jersey, which I am sure was also accurate reporting.

In these situations, it is always better to be over-prepared and early. No doubt, there are many many New Jerseyans whom NJ-101.5 helped be adequately prepared and informed. Well, done 101.5, !!!

Complete Nonsense? MedianJ is not responsible for NJ101.5 WKXW FM Trenton losing almost half their audience in the M/S/U PPM over the last couple of years and is currently languishing in the 4’s. I'm sure the smart execs at Townsquare are well aware of those pathetic numbers.

As far as this weekend's coverage of the hurricane it was a joke, with most of the important information coming from the traffic and weather reports. Being such I would expect during the next major news event Eric Scott convenes his whole news team of anchors and reporters to Trenton as the talk hosts didn’t cut it. A full analysis will be coming soon.

101.5 did a great job as usual with everything - but what impressed me was the great use of Facebook to get information out. With so many people having smartphones, staying on top online as well as on air is equally important.

Kudos also to Press for doing a great job gathering info and doing extra reports all weekend on The Breeze & Thunder 106.

Among quite a few valid reasons, actually.

Considering Jim Gearhart, Bob Williams, Demenski and Doyle and the other staff were in the building and on air along with Big Joe Henry during the weekend coverage, the comment from Median re NJ101.5's coverage makes no sense.

They took calls from listeners from across the state looking for information and even took calls from listeners outside the NJ101.5 listening area who had relatives or property in the area, providing them with info or requesting that other callers provide it if they couldn't.

When I listened the calls kept moving and when I sampled NJ101.5 recently, host Michele Jerson was allowing callers to request help or provide status, but not to slam those who were trying to help. She rightfully and correctly ended a call from someone who was complaining about a Verizon tech sitting down somewhere even though she had no power. Michele reminded them that Verizon is a PHONE company and that many of these people have been working hard to fix issues and deserve to take breaks.

I cracked up at that stupid caller. She called saying that she saw 6 Verizon trucks sitting on the side of the road for hours with their employees doing nothing. She was complaining that her phone bill will go up because of this. Michele told her that her phone bill would go up if she keeps making more phone calls. That idiot was the stupidest caller I heard during the entire hurricane.

Sadly, some of us have bosses who would walk in on you taking a 5 minute break, then walk by 3 hours later when you're taking another 5 minute break, then they'd stupidly assume you weren't working at all.

I couldn't agree with you more on this. So many broadcast TV and radio stations have set up an online presence which exists solely to promote their on-air programming. NJ101.5's presence on Facebook was truly helpful, invaluable actually.

But they haven't been owned by Press Communications for years... :)

Whoops. Should have been more clear - I meant kudos to 101.5, as well as to Press. I know they haven't owned them in years....my apologies!
