NJ 101.5 weekends

Everytime I tune in for some oldies I have to listen to boring traffic North,South and weather and a break that just makes me scan or look for another station. I know I work for WMTR but when I tune in MTR at least I'm assured to hear music with no clutter especially on the weekends. 101.5 has got to stop the clutter and play more oldies. Grant if there's some big traffic problem then report it. With CBS gone you would thing 101.5 would wake up. Then there's big Joe with his canned laugher...MAN THAT ACT IS SO OLD get some new laugh tracks Joe. I'd like to listen but traffic every 2 songs is a joke.... Glad I have my Sirius radio and good old AM radio to listen to WMTR, WNNJ, WRNJ WQHT and WPEN. There's nothing on FM worth listening too at least in my area.

What do you guys thing? and what do you listen to?

It's traffic and weather every 15 minutes. I figure with news, traffic, weather and spots, there is still about 45 minutes each hour for music. That's a full service station for you.

About six or seven minutes at the top of the hour for news, traffic, spots and weather; one minute at :18 for traffic and weather, four or five minutes at :33 for traffic, spots and weather and three or four minutes at :48 for traffic, spots and weather. And by the way, no one at the station has called the music "Oldies" for about a decade. The station plays mid-'60s to about mid-'80s.

As for Big Joe, he is what he is. He is the weekend voice of the station and he is mobbed at his appearances around the state. I think the enthusiasm shown by jocks like Frank Thomas, Bob Williams and Craig Allen make listening to the station on weekends very enjoyable and entertaining. They know and enjoy the music and it shows. There are other jocks there who just show up and say the same things over and over and over again. Not entertaining for me, but they work the format and make the PD and GM happy, so more power to them.

I also enjoy The Breeze, Sunny 104.5 and Oldies 100 here in central New Jersey for my music during the week and on weekends.<P ID="signature">______________

The originator of this thread needs to understand what elements listeners mention most as reasons they listen. Once you get past music, weather and traffic are always high on the list. Not only are weather and traffic NOT clutter, they are two of the most important reasons for tune-in.

Another reason listeners frequently mention for tuning in is "companionship". The originator of this thread also seems to miss the reality of that wonderful connection between Big Joe and his listeners. Few radio personalitiies manage to provide that connection to their audience these days, however, Big Joe does it in a big way! Had the originator of this thread been at the Monmouth Park car show (or any number of Big Joe appearances) recently and witnessed that magic in action, I am sure he/she would not have even considered writing the message posted above.

I would strongly recommend that any radio personality who wants to study first-hand a course in "Radio Personality Appearance 101" should attend a Big Joe remote. You will learn from a pro how to connect with your audience. You may also then appreciate the way the audience feels about Big Joe. I can assure you they dont think "his act is old". It may also be a good experience to try to understand the difference between your perception of his show and his audiences perception.

In today's universe of corporate radio, few broadcasters understand the importance of providing these elements to their listeners. My hat is off to the ownership of NJ-101.5 for being an outstanding source of information, entertainment and companionship.

This sums up the problem with your entire post. You say that 101.5 needs to take advantage of the end of CBS... but the point is, Big Joe is the closest thing to an old-school WCBS DJ.

And besides, why are you even bringing up CBS and 101.5? Although they play(ed) similar music, 101.5 is only music from 7 PM Friday to 11PM Sunday. 52 hours of music does not a competitor make.

101.5's formula is simple.. and it works.

Hear, hear! I've been away from Jersey for a year and a half, and don't miss too much. However, one thing I do miss is Big Joe's Jersey Music Trivia and the Big Old Buick! <P ID="signature">______________

Perhaps it's a recent change, but I clearly remember them under OLDIES until recently. I'm in the NYC area so I don't often get a strong enough signal to pull in the RDS on my receiver.

You want to eliminate personalities, traffic and weather...what do you have left?....JACK!

I live on Long Island (NY), but travel frequently through the Garden State, either to PA or down the shore to the Wildwoods or Ocean City. NJ 101.5 is the ONLY station we listen to. It has helped out COUNTLESS times in getting around shore-traffic jams. We find both the weekday and weekend lineups highly entertaining. (and the funny thing is, anywhere else, we NEVER listen to Oldies)

This might be a related topic, but I think Bob Williams is awesome at everything he does on that station. Did anyone hear the morning he was on for Jim when he got caught in traffic? I've heard him fill in before on talk shows, doing the traffic in the morning, and playing music on Saturday AM's and I think he's great at all three. In my opinion, he's a great asset to the station.<P ID="signature">______________

Hey! Nevermind Bob...What the hell are you guys up to? I miss you and Scott immensely. They replaced you with the "Pig & The Puppet" Program. That is a gross understatement to say that you guys are missed. Last I heard you were doing work in Detroit and if I am not mistaken you filled-in with Judi about a year ago. It's a shame but I no longer listen to that station after what that idiot said about Dick Codey's wife. That station needs to grow a back-bone and reprimand when necessary.

I can't stand the 50 song burnt out playlist that 101.5 has, so I listen to Jack or WLNG 92.1 from Sag Harbor, NY when we've got trop.
