NJ Broadcast Giant, Phil Roberts passes at 73

Nice, dude. Guy dies and that's what you have to say. Classy.

I met Phil once when I was 23, and had been working at my first gig in radio in Smaller than Small Market, NJ. A neighbor of my parent's knew him, and arranged for me to have an informational interview with him.

Phil asked what he could do for me. I plopped down a copy of R&R and said, "I want this job." He picked up the phone, asked for the GM by name and said, "(name), I have an energetic, enthusiastic young man in my office who I think you should interview for your job opening."

The GM said he would, and we set it up.

I got the job.

Phil didn't get me the job, I know this from things that were said at the interview and things that happened during the interview process.

Phil got me the opportunity. He didn't have to. He could have told me, "Work hard, keep at it." He could have critiqued my 2 minute air-check. He could've done a million different things other than pick up the phone and request that the GM of a radio station interview some wet behind the ears kid he'd just met 3 minutes prior.

Phil loved radio and loved the people in radio.

R.I.P.

Phil was a RADIO person through and through. Many people didn't realize what he DID for the industry here in NJ. For those who KNOW, we're all going to miss his expertise and wisdom.
Radio in NJ is better for having an advocate like Phil Roberts.
BE BIG!
