NJ Radio Speculative Changes

If one can choose what to do with all the stations licensed in New Jersey...What would you change? What would you keep?

105.7 WCHR ("The Hawk") should take a cue from 103.7 WMGM: ditch the corny animal station name and go either Active Rock or Alternative. They can also keep much of the same staff in place, as many of the personalities would sound at home on a station that plays current rock. There's a big void for this format in the market, and WCHR has consistently underperformed. Now is the chance for them to become a player in the Monmouth/Ocean market. (On a side note: this would have been a good format choice for 104.9 WSJO, if MGM hadn't beaten them to the punch).

98.5 WBBO (B 98.5) will never escape the ratings cellar with its current format - it's just too crowded a field, and most of their desired audience is listening to stations in NYC & Philly, or they're tuned in to 94.3 The Point. In addition, the sound of the station is just too childish: it goes very heavy on the bubblegum pop, which adults simply aren't into. If they really want to serve Ocean County, the best way to do so is through a Talk format. Much of the area does not get the big market AM stations, and even NJ 101.5 has a weak signal in spots. A combination of programming that focuses on local politics and events, along with some syndicated personalities (a la Atlantic City's 1400 WOND) would do well with the money demos here.

100.1 WJRZ (Magic 100.1) is in even more sorry shape than The B: the odd loser out in the crowded soft rock field, losing big to competitors 106.7 Lite FM, 92.7 WOBM, and 107.1/99.7 The Breeze. They should have thrown in the towel some time ago, but they still persist in the hopes that things will get better (newsflash: they haven't, and they won't). One of two formats here could work: a return to Classic Hits (which really should have never been dropped in the first place), or an effort to attract a younger audience with a "Gen-X" format. Again, these are formats that are non-existent in much of the market, so this move should be a no-brainer for Greater Media.

102.7 WWAC (Wild 102.7) should get at least one or two more books to see if it's caught on. If it doesn't, Longport should move its ratings leader (the aforementioned WOND) over to this frequency. As far as 1400 goes, either a simulcast of 94.1 WIP or a Spanish-language format (music and/or sports) should do fine.

Wild 102.7 should have been all dance like The Highway Vibe in Vegas. A third CHR is useless. Wild sounded much better under JVC/Atlantic, but unfortunately it never had a chance to thrive under Atlantic.

Even though I liked Wild better when it was dance, it wasn't right for the market. Not familiar enough and way too many remixes. What Wild is doing now is better, although now they may have swung too far in the other direction, away from dance and too close to WAYV and Kiss.

Kiss is no longer a CHR though; they're straight up Rhythmic. Wild is straddling the line between Pop and Rhythmic, like Now in NYC. WAYV is South Jersey's only real CHR, at least until they get scared and go back to Hot AC like they always do.

With the exception of sports talk moving to FM, I swear the more stations supposedly change their sound, the more they sound more and more like everything else on the dial. First of all, urban formats (in whatever variation) account for the most stations. Then, I really see little difference between CHR, AC, and Hot AC these days. I'm having a harder time differentiating between what's rock and country; and what used to be oldies stations are now playing classic hits from the '80s, which might conceivably pop up now and then on an AC station.

That said, I would like to see changes that totally move away from the homogenization of the dial; something that stands out and catches your attention as you're scanning the dial. The Unforgettables WRDR back on 104.9. Expand the type of oldies heard on 92.1 WVLT into a full-time format (nights and weekends) and possibly add a classic country show once a week. Add live DJs to Easy 93.1 to give it a more "homey" feel. The Dial Global Adult Standards format or Music Of Your Life full-time on 1360 WNJC. (That's a problem... many times you find something you like during the week, but when you try to listen on the weekend, you get brokered programming or infomercials).

okay, I made a previous comment but somehow got deleted. If you cant handle dance music on the dial or me mentioning 96.7 or now for some reason 89.3, then come over to party732.com. :( :) ;) :D ;D :-*
