NJ101.5 Eric Scott NJ Governor Debate

F

Sometimes I can be critical of NJ101.5 however I had to listen to last nights debate on NJ101.5 for my own job in news and I have to say Eric Scott did a very good job.

If you missed it here's how the night went. The Jersey Guys kept it light before the debate between 7-7:30 PM doing what they do best goofing around but it was a good warm up act. ( No near fist fights broke out between Craig and the Dems ).

Eric Scott did a very good job of keeping the debate interesting and jumped in to correct or clarify some statements that were made. Corzine seemed to be more aggressive here then in the NJN debate but Doug was without a doubt much more glib than Jon. Doug seemed more relaxed and Jon seemed more uptight. Eric Scott covered a wide range of topics and the time really flew for a 90 minute debate. It seems these debates favor Doug since his name is less known than the Senator and the exposure can only help him.

Nothing really new was said here that wasn't said in the NJN debate except Corzine did put his foot in his mouth as Tommy G kept pointing out in the post debate show. Doug asked Jon why he said at a rally that the former Gov. was great. Jon replied that it was a democratic rally and that's what you say but he then added that Gov. Jim was terrible. Tommy G kept pointing this out and added does Corzine just say what people want to hear at that moment and what can you believe from Corzine?
Then a caller to Tommy G followed that up pointing out that Corzine said he is a Giants AND Eagles fan. The caller added that's impossible since they are rivals and that Corzine is just pandering to North Jersey with the Giants and South Jersey with the Eagles once again suggesting that Corzine will say what you want to hear.

Again it was well done and entertaining. Everyone involved at NJ101.5 especially Eric Scott should be congratulated on a very good job.

I missed the Jersey Guy's pre debate show. I like when they mock the candidates and the democratic party but I did catch most of the debate and some of Tommy G's post debate show. Eric Scott has to be the best news guy in NJ. I'll also say Eric did a good for a well run and informative debate. I missed the NJN debate so all the information provided during the debate will help me make up my mind. I did hear Tommy G hammer away at Corzine's flip flop in regard to McGreevey being a good Governor then saying last night he was bad and admitting he only said McGreevey was good when he was standing next to him at a rally. If Corzine was listening to Tommy G he had to be pulling whatever hair he has on his head out after the call about the Giants and the Eagles.

Craig Carton of The Jersey Guys just announced they are endorsing Doug Forrester for Governor. I believe this will help Forrester since their listeners seem to hang on every word The Jersy Guys say.

As far as last nights debate I agree with everyone it was produced and done well by NJ101.5 News Director Eric Scott. It's apparent that Eric lives for this and it showed last night. He has a very good knowledge of the State and it's issues. I don't believe anyone could have done it better than Eric Scott. After the debate Tommy G did not come straight out last night and endorse Forrester but he said as a father and husband he can relate more to Doug Forrester who is also a husband and father. Tommy kinda slammed Corzine by stated he's divorced and lent a girlfriend $400,000 then forgives the loan. It appeared to me that Tommy implied that Corzine has to pay woman to bed him or maybe I'm just reading into it.

>Uh-oh. News flash. N-J 101-5 Talk Hosts endorse Republican candidate for governor!!!

Front page of tomorrow's Star Ledger for sure.

You are reading into it. Tommy G was making a comparison on how Doug Forrester married his childhood sweetheart and stayed married all these years through the ups and downs and so did Tommy G marry his childhood sweetheart and stayed married. It shows committment, love and loyalty females in the audience like hearing this stuff. As far as Corzine not sticking it out with his wife and forgiving a girlfriend of a $400,000 loan I guess Tommy wanted you to make your own conclusions but I feel you read more into it about Jon Corzine paying to bed girlfriends.

Ya gotta love it. This station never lets up in its role as the radio headquarters of the New Jersey Republican party. Now we have Tommy G analyzing the domestic lives of the candidates for governor, and of course, it ends with a slam of the Democratic candidate. Maybe they should start billing him as Doctor Tommy G (although I question the syndication potential). Somehow, I doubt this self-styled psychologist would hold certain divorced Republicans (Ronald Reagan comes to mind) to the same standard.

I will say this much. I have never met Jon Corzine, but I know numerous people who have, and one person who worked for him in a low-level position. All said he was consistently courteous and gentlemanly. He's also a man who did very well financially, and rather than become another wine-sipping corporate golfer, he's given much time and money to those a little less fortunate in life. And that influenced his politics.

But I do agree that Eric Scott does a fine and very fair job in the midst of that sea of right-wing pander bears.

Jim, I actually heard what Tommy G said during the post debate show. I didn't see it as a slam to Corzine as you wrote just Tommy saying he has a similiar lifestyle to Doug Forrester married a longtime to his childhood sweetheart and Corzine forgiving a loan to a girlfriend. Also Ronald Reagan never lent $400,000 to a girlfriend who heads a big NJ union and forgive it. Something's sleezy here with Corzine.

Tommy G has said he's a registered independent. I've heard him slam Bush many times and he said he did vote for Bill Clinton so I'm trying to find some merit in your statement that NJ101.5 is the headquarters for the GOP. Do you listen or are you talking out of your butt? Corzine may be courteous and gentlemanly like you said but it doesn't mean he'll make a good governor.

>No, Ronad Reagan never lent 400 thousand dollars to a girlfriend-he just traded arms for hostages. But that's another matter.

You seem to want to have it both ways. You say Tommy didn't slam Corzine, but you also say that he did mention the loan in a clearly negative fashion. So it sure sounds like a slam to me.

I and others with whom I've discussed this matter fail to see the issue with this loan. In fact, I think Corzine's actions speak well of him. He had a relationship with a woman--in the course of that relationship he loaned her some money, they parted amicably (and no one has suggested that they didn't), and he forgave the loan. You also need to keep in mind that although you and I might consider this a large sum of money, it's peanuts to Corzine--just not that big a deal.

I also find it interesting that in typical NJ-101-5 fashion, you make no mention of the numerous questions that have been raised about the financing of Forrester's campaign and his possible violation of campaign finance laws with possibly illegal corporate contributions, involving much larger sums of money than the Corzine loan.

After all the cheap shots are taken, I have a lot of confidence that people will understand that as I said previously, Corzine is a wealthy guy who decided not to be a typical Republican corporate hack, golfer, and champion of the rich, and became an ally of the middle class and dispossessed. I find that honorable. Sorry that you don't seem to.

Based on many years in the news/talk format, here's my take. "Registered independent" is almost always a code word for a right winger who might be slightly less right wing on certain issues. And all talk hosts, even the righties are slamming Bush right now, because beyond anything to do with left and right, the man is clearly an incompetent thug and the polls show that everyone knows it.

I listen to NJ101-5 no more than necessary to confirm their continuing political sympathies. Here's my argument in a nutshell:tell me any current statewide or national political campaign in which a NJ 101-5 host has supported a Democrat. I could care less whether Tommy voted for Clinton or not-that's ancient history.

I've heard various hosts over the years acknowledge the station's Republican leanings--you are the first I have ever heard question them.

However, having slammed the station repeatedly (and I'm always happy to do it), there are a number of air people who deserve kudos. Eric Scott, as I think virtually everyone agrees, is a classy pro who runs a world-class news operation.

And while Mary Walter is marching in lock-step with the right-wing mentality there, she doesn't talk politics much, and I think she does an outstanding job with the night show. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that hosting a show like that is a tough balancing act--she keeps it both smart and edgy, without letting it turn into a smut-fest, as it no doubt would if certain other hosts over there were in charge.

Tommy G has said he's a registered independent. I've heard

Someone at New Jersey 101.5 is endorsing a Republican? What a surprise.

They've supported Forrester before. He still lost.

Anyone can register as anything they want. If you don't hear the GOP-slant on 101.5, I would have to question whether you're listening!
