Robert Roe was a congressman from North Jersey in the 70's and 80's. Late last year in the lame-duck session the Legislature quietly pushed through a bill to officially name part of Route 23 the Robert Roe Highway. Guess what? Roe was involved in a serious auto accident just after he left Congress. He copped a plea to DUI and reckless driving -- barely avoided going to trial on a charge of "assault by auto".
This fragrant story would have stayed a secret had it not been for New Jersey 101.5. Jim Gearhart brought up the Roe Highway/Roe DUI thing this week. The Jersey Guys fired away at Roe yesterday afternoon. MADD even chipped in with its own statement. Result? Roe has asked the state to remove his name from the highway.
As to why the State of New Jersey saw fit to rename Route 23 for Roe? The official excuse was "He brought in a lot of federal money for New Jersey over the years".
