NJN New Jersey Budget coverage

Once again think god New Jersey has the New Jersey Network. NJ has shut down non-essential government because no budget was agreed upon by the deadline of 7/1. Governor Corzine signed an order to shut the non-essential government down on Saturday and could really impact the state more by Wednesday. If you been watching NJN today or in the past, NJN has had in the past and should be the case this time around constant LIVE updates on this story with interviews and any hearings by the elected officials and any sessions of the NJ house and senate, those event would also be aired live on NJN. This station is important to Jersey residents for election coverage and budget and their daily newscasts. I hope people will take the time to pledge to NJN and tell them thanks for the news service that they have for many years. Keep up the good work NJN Thoughts on their coverage so far? My view is that their coverage is the best and cannot be matched by any other public TV station in the USA. NJN is committed to keeping the state informed with this important story and be there for NJ during any major news event.

Compared to the so-called "Delaware News" on channel 12, the difference is striking. Partly because NJN does do a good job but mostly because channel 12 is so bad.
The quality of difference can be heard on the radio side comparing Millennium News Jersey with Delaware's Only News Station.
Of course, in all fairness, part of the difference is due to the fact that there isn't much news in Delaware. Crime. Accidents. Fires. Puff Pieces.

Why doesn't WHYY-TV do some things like NJN does like carrying coverage like this.

WHYY did a newscast at one time with Nancy Karibjanian...competing with the old Suburban Cable Channel 2 "First State News." Sharon Mittelman was their main anchor when I worked there (before the Lenfest Group owned it, it was run by Rollins Cable, then Heritage Cablevision, then TCI Cablevision, then Suburban...who then created the regional "TSM News" which lasted nine months). Of course, Crapcast took over Suburban, started CN8 News, and we now know what's going to happen with that newscast.

As far as to why they don't do a real newscast anymore, I really couldn't answer that. Even though Fred/Mike says there is not much going on in Delaware, I still think there's enough going on every day to put a newscast on the air. The old Channel 2 did it for many years, beginning in 1983. I feel that Channel 12 could still do it today. Perhaps, they simply don't want to spend the money on the staff to put the show on the air. Maybe it's easier to do the "news magazine-type" show they are doing now...which is a small segment of "news" then the chit-chat segments they do.

Very little of channel 12's Delaware Tonight is actually news. Mostly it's talking heads a la Jim Lehrer's Newshour.
Delaware has about the same population as the Allentown market. And that market supports a very well done news broadcast from channel 69.
Delaware has always been a journalistic backwater willing to tolerate a substandard product like the News-Journal (or State News). Gannett thrives by publishing McPapers on the cheap.
Delaware gets better coverage from the Salisbury stations than it does from channel 12.
Channel 12 is a Philadelphia station doing Delaware News because it's stuck with the job - and because the state and a few other underwriters are willing to put up cash. It appears channel 12 keeps costs down on the Delaware News so they will have enough money left over to pay their high management salaries, buy fancy equipment and support their lavish building on Independence Mall.
NJN is a New Jersey Network (not New York - not Philadelphia). New Jersey News is their raison d'etre - their USP. They have to do a good job. Channel 12 does not.

I know that NJN doesn't do newscasts on holidays but because of the budget crisis, NJN will air news tonight at 6 PM, 7:30 PM and 11 PM all EDT. The station is also airing hourly updates at the top of each hour during the crisis.

Or sooner if anything happens.

WHYY basically provides the minimum of coverage to Delaware. They are a Philadelphia station, as that is where their transmitter and man viewership is, despite being licensed to Wilmington. I am amazed that nobody from Delaware has challenged their license, since I think they would be succesful.

I sent this e-mail to NJN today:

NJN is the best

It was this sort of obsessive fan boy comments and telling what you e-mailed staion A about random thing B that got you banned from tvnewstalk.net. What are you, twelve?

Careful Toby. GB and the Radio Racket crew thinks he's the cat's meow. You don't want to get on their bad side, they will rain on you with untruthful attacks.

Yes, we all know, Julius is borderline mongoloid. Every once in a while he can smack one out of the park. Frequently, its just fun to watch him strike out, then laugh and mock him.

This is like radio kickball....

Rockin' Rob/Bob Altimari
South Jersey Correspondent
The Radio Racket
You flame them. Yet you identify yourself as one of them.
What sense does that make?
???

Fred/Mike: Rob is correct about that though. G.B. can't stand me, and he flooded their message board recently with untruthful attacks towards me. The thread was removed after I responded, and disagreed with G.B. on everything. He probably removed the thread, after I called him out on his worthless drivel and pack of lies.

Rob: how come your "signature" on here still says your a correspondent on the Radio Racket, when you are no longer associated with them? Julius won't go away. The moderators won't put a leash on him. What he continues to do to this day is why he was banned from this board the first time. And the silly thing is, the administration of the "other board" are the ones who were the first ones to get rid of him the first time.

Toby: Julius sent me an e-mail recently...whining about his banishment from TV News Talk. He wanted to know why he was banned...I gave him my opinion as to why he was banned. One of the reasons is what you stated earlier. I sent an e-mail to their moderator, congratulating them on being the first board in recent memory to ban him (meaning after this board, Filly Tawk, and Lance's board stupidly reinstated him). Of course, Hulkie didn't respond to my congratulatory e-mail. Julius does seem kind of "stalkerish" to me...sending e-mails to random stations, mostly about nothing of importance.

Shawn, I don't share your reaction to Julius and his posts. He may ask dumb questions and he may have some dumb ideas, but he never tries to hurt or attack anyone. I asked dumb questions and had dumb ideas when I was a teen-aged radio geek. He doesn't annoy me personally, although I can understand your frustration since there is another poster whose dumb comments do annoy me. But I really don't think someone else getting annoyed is a good enough reason to ban anyone. Julius (and the guy who annoys me) aren't hurting anyone.

Back to the discussion: Kudos to Jim Hooker who had to stall for 20 minutes before Moe, I mean Corzine came out and signed the budget. Thank goodness, that Rider Univ. political science professor was in the room and got up and came over to offer some analysis. Yes. NJN is to be commended for their updates throughout the shutdown, both in Trenton and in Atlantic City. OK back to our regularly scheduled catfight.

What about the coverage Friday into Saturday on NJN. It was really amazing how the team did so well with its coverage especially the camera people and staff behind the cameras. NJN had a tough job switching back and fourth because both house and Senate was in session at the same time at 3 AM on Saturday morning

You actually stayed up to watch all of this?
What kind of job do you have, I want to know since it seems to have a lot of free time.
