Certainly not the murder and other crime stories along with lifestyle tip features that commercial outlets run. Those things don't have any impact on the lives of the vast majority of viewers. Politics, while dry if not presented properly, does.

Actually yes, that is the stuff I want to see. I like to know what is going on in the communities around me. I don't care about the lifestyle/entertainment stories though. Most stories related to politics are just "hot air". I don't need a daily update on legislators working on pension reform. Fill me in when they actually come to a decision.

Why can't NJ news be produced in an adjacent state? I know what is going on in NYC and NY State. It doesn't matter that much where it comes from. How many people on this list know that all of NBC's Owned and Operated stations (O&O's) have all of their Master Control operations in Atlanta?

I think it's mostly a matter regarding broadcasting union policy. NJN staff and the union probably have a clause in their contract/agreement that studios and spot reporting must originate within the state. Yes, certain stories do cross state boundaries, but the focus should remain NJ-centric for the most part.

NJN's newscast isn't perfect, but it's about the only thing they do that's unique and sometimes worthwhile. Hence, moving that one show to another outlet available throughout NJ would eliminate any reason for NJN to exist.

I almost feel that WNET could most likely go the same route that WHYY did a few years ago and dismantle the regularly-produced weekday format news and go to a weekly news magazine format similar to WHYY's "First" program.

As for other similar programming currently on NJN, I'm hoping that "State of the Arts" does remain, although that may not be in WNET's remit for the new NJ PBS format. Then again, they could always try for something akin to WLVT/PBS39's "Tempo!" program...

NBC (NABET) should have had NJN's union negotiate fro them then. No problem moving it all out to Atlanta a few years ago. Everything can remain NJ centric it is just a server in NY runnig the stuff.
