NLC is going to hurt BMW!

The new "Sound" of WNLC in New London is going to have a real impact in the market. In most markets that get a Variety station you see the AC stations take a tumble. So what will happen to WBMW? I think BMW will take a big hit leaving Hall's Country station to own the market. Someone should take a run at the Country station. Will Citadel flip their talk station to a best of the new and legends? Will BMW's sister station 107 flip to country to keep Hall from running away with the market? I bet no one does anything, they don't have a clue. I guess Hall is the only group that gets it!

I haven't had a chance to hear WNLC since the flip, but it will be interesting to see what the fallout will be. Citadel tried going up against WBMW directly with the old Mix 102 and failed miserably. I'm sure 98.7 will grab a few listeners from WBMW and WMOS, but a lot of the former standards listeners will probably wind up at Hall-owned WKNL or defect to WBMW. After all the listener shifting, there may not be a lot of major movement in station rank. Sure, WBMW may lose a share 12+, but the stations that are the most vunerable seem to be WMOS and....WKNL. Hall said at WNLC's launch that the new station was designed not to conflict with WKNL. Many of these new classic hits sign-ons either replace oldies stations or take a major ratings dent out of them. Time will tell if 98.7 and 100.9 can peacefully co-exist with eachother.

My money is on 102.3 to flip first, because the people that own 107 don't have a clue. Urban does not and has not worked in New London.

Re: NLC is going to hurt BMW?

Your scenario seems more likely than the other posts. The switch to classic hits makes business sense, but the jury's out as to where that audience will come from. As far as a second country station is concerned, there's no guarantee that people happy with WCTY would defect any more than WBMW's audience wanted an alternative with the former Mix 102. Major, mainstream AC stations aren't exactly taking a big hit at the hands of variety hits or classic hits type formats. WRCH/Hartford, WSRS/Worcester, WLTW/NYC, WMJX/Boston and WWLI/Providence are doing just fine, thank you. With a solid signal, established morning show, relating to local listeners, decent production, researched music and aggressive promotions, mainstream AC is a great sell. If you do that, then you "get it."

As far as a second Country station, if someone doesn't challenge Hall, they will be left with the biggest ratings in the market. That is why you create a Legend componant to the music mix. Citadel has already lost their dominance in the market, soon BMW will.

Just like RCH did with HCN as classic hits??? You sound like you work for hall.

Well It's been over 2 years now and WBMW is still standing tall. Maybe you need to find a job with your skills like a weatherman, they are hardly ever right either ;)

Not true, Johnny Fuller. Have you looked at the real book, you know the one Arbitron publishes? Thats right, you don't purchase it so you don't know what the truth is.

Johnny F, if everyone else gave away their advertising the way you do...we'd all be out of work

Re: NLC is going to hurt BMW?

Please you don't think we can't find out what the ratings are. And as for giving away advertising, I don't see anyone here being out of work as a matter of fact we keep hiring people because we are getting bigger. We probably do more production in a week than most stations do in months. Try again!!

NLC has rapidly earned a place in the market, cracking the top 4 and higher in some demos. I advised a client to "buy" NLC since, in my opinion, it was a sleeper; a station that has a lot of room to grow. Thing is, though, that NLC has indeed cut the floor from under KOOL but hasn't really affected BMW or CTY. Also, NLC is losing steam on the air; having what's her name on morning, noon, and night is extremely boring since all she does is read liners, promos and playlists in a pleasant elevator voice. And the music is drifting away from the edge it had 6 or more months ago, relying on more mainstream hits and fewer "Wow! I haven't heard that since....." songs. I'm not sure how that will play but I doubt it's going to steal audience away from the established leaders in the market.

That's true. NLC could stand more air personality. They've got like two whole people on all day and night. That's ridiculous. There's plenty of talent out of work right now that could add to NLC. Classic hits is a popular format, but you need a little more personality and DJs on NLC to take it to the next level, IMHO.
