No Black Talk Radio Station in New York

Seems strange there is no Black Talk radio station in the NYC area.

Philadelphia has WURD (900 AM). Chicago has the legendary WVON (1690 AM), Washington,DC has WOL (1450 AM), Baltimore's WOLB (1010 AM), CBS owned WAOK (1380) in Atlanta. Detroit has 1200 AM WCHB and Cleveland has WERE 1490 AM.

Seems NYC is bad for black radio. No black talk and only one Urban AC.

It's not full-time, but 1600 WWRL does have talk programs aimed at the African-American and Caribbean immigrant communities.

Some of the FM pirate stations also run call-in talk shows, in Haitian Creole!

Having a talk station for the African American community seems dependent on several things:

  • An available facility that covers the Black population well
  • An owner with the patience to allow this to develop
  • A market with a minimum of 20% Black population to guarantee the presence of targeted ad dollars.

Philly is the most marginal, with rather limited billings... and it is in another market with a less-than-20% Black population.

How many markets with less than 20% Black population can you name that have two Urban AC stations? New York could not sustain two of them.

Bad for black radio, you have got to be kidding!!! Yes losing Kiss-FM was a blow to black radio, and I'm still amazed at the lack of demonstrations when they left, but you have WBLS, Power 105.1, and Hot 97 as black stations. Then you have plenty of black music playing on 92.3, 100.3, and 103.5. Then there's still some on 101.1, 102.7, and 106.7. WLIB 1190 is a black station, and WWRL is predominately black. Even WBAI 99.5 has black hosts. Meanwhile no current rock station, which would be heavily white.

The reason why there's no Black Talk Radio Station (if you're referring to a fulltime station like the old WLIB) is because WLIB was a low rated station during their talk days.

The listeners of WBLS want to hear music most of the time. That's why "Open Line", the Rev. Al Sharpton and Gary Byrd get no more than four hours a week total on Sundays.

Thanks,

Plus even the legendary WVON and WOL, both of which have huge ownership commitments to the black audience, get terrible ratings, mostly from people over 65.

Meanwhile the FCC constantly talks about increasing minority ownership, with the thought of more black and Hispanic talk programming. The bad news is if it's commercially sponsored, it will be hard to support.

@Bob, Most Top 40s play some Urban music. That isn't unique to NYC's Top 40 radio stations. You have to sit through Bieber to get to Beyonce. As far as Rock is concerned, wasn't Alternative tried on 92.3 three times and on 101.9 once?

That market is one of the very few exceptions.

Both are signal-challenged rimshots, one getting a 65 dbu part way into Tarrant County and the other getting the same 65 dbu into a piece of Dallas County... neither of them cover but a sliver of the other country. Both look fine in Collin and Denton counties, but they have a major fail where most of the population still is.

Adding to the list:
San Francisco/Oakland (7%)- KBLX and KISQ
Chicago (17%) - WVAZ and WSRB
St Louis (19%) - WMJM and WFUN

Um, Oakland is 28% black, Chicago is 33% black, and St. Louis is 49.2% black. Those are 2010 census numbers. San Francisco is 7% black, but Oakland is far from it.

Isn't Dallas 25% black, as well?

before the somewhat recent demise of 98.7 WRKS didn't both WBLS and WRKS do quite well in the PPM's a bill decently? We know BLS is doing quite well currently all on it's own.

BLS is doing SO WELL it's may be #1 in the next few months. It's almost a synergy after "absorbing" 98.7 Kiss fm. CC Might be launching another Urban AC, and from the looks of the numbers they may flip Power BACK to Urban AC. Even with that Flip I doubt Hot 97 will come even close to top 5 let alone #1. I also think that either Cumulus or CBS Radio couldn't help but fill the void left by power if it was to flip.

Power bills way too much and has way too much at stake to flip to urban AC. By the way WWPR was never urban AC.

Oakland is not a media market. San Francisco MSA is, and it is 7%.

Chicago is 17.4%. St. Louis is 19.3%. Dallas is 15%.

That is true, but you did not say anything about signals, you asked how many markets with less than 20% Black population can you name that have two Urban AC stations? I gave you market number 5.

To be fair though wouldn't it be obvious we're talking about full market signals? Rimshots don't count.

Jammin 105.1 started as Rhythmic Oldies. Then switched to Urban Oldies. Then evolved to Urban AC before they flipped to Power. Some of Kiss personalities were on Jammin before the switch to Power (Tanya Simpson). If the Urban AC version of Jammin were on today, it would bring WBLS down about 3 full Arbitron points. Jammin went up against both WBLS and Kiss. Frankie Blue is a way better PD than Skip Dillard.
