Put it on UPN. It'll give them a nice ratings boost. *Sarcasim* I don't watch anything on UPN. I just watch reruns of shows that happen to air on my local UPN affiliate - Becker, King Of Queens, Home Improvement, and The Parkers. Plus I watch Montel Williams when he has Physic Sylvia Browne on. And of course I watch the NY Yankees.
______________

That was bound to happen eventually. Miss America hasn't been a real ratings draw in several years.

Interesting choice -- they can run it in tandem with America's Next Top Model and package the whole evening as "TV's Cattiest Night"!! But, you could be right, Jay about a rating uptick. Miss America on UPN may outdraw even ANTM, as scary as that sounds.

But, really, the Miss America Organization will probably wind up settling with a cable network. Outside of ABC and NBC, none of the broadcast ones -- even UPN, as ratings challenged as they are -- will choose take on an (forgive me for saying this) antiquated beauty pageant that: 1) doesn't fit into their programming demographic; and 2) has drawn fewer viewers in successive years. It also doesn't help that the pageant is run on Saturday night, which is now the least-watched evening of primetime. Wherever it goes, the show must move out of Saturday.

As for cable, the obvious choices would be a female-oriented network such as Lifetime or Oxygen. But who knows -- USA, Bravo, someone, anyone??
______________

See this is what happens when they got rid of Bert Parks :)

On a serious note, personally I could care if any network carries Miss America or any other beauty pageant. They are sooooo boring.

The Miss North Carolina Pageant hasn't been televised in at
least two years, so bad were the ratings, and it, too, was
always on Saturday night. I wonder if other state pageants
are no longer televised.

I have never seen a state pagent televised in New York or New Jersey.
______________

You might have been kidding about Bert Parks, but isn't it
interesting that no one has really sucessfully filled his
shoes? Let's see: Ron Ely, Gary Collins, Regis Philbin,
Tony Danza, and probably a couple more whose names escape me.

Likewise, no one has really successfully replaced Bob Barker
on the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. You may recall he
quit because the winners were receiving fur coats, among other
prizes (and not fake furs, which is what set him off).

I only think the Miss Massachusetts pageant has been televised a couple of times, and as far as I recall, not at all since the 1970's.

I don't even think a firm date has been set for this year's Miss America pageant, although some state pageants have taken place and others are scheduled.

I'm beginning to think that unless the pageant gets a TV deal in the next few weeks, this year's event will be cancelled. And if this year's pageant isn't held, it will be difficult if not impossible for the Miss America organization to start-up the pageant again.

I would suspect that if the pageant is held in the future, it won't be on a Saturday.

I don't believe the Miss California pageant has been televised since the 1970s, and it was a syndicated program even then.

I believe the Miss Texas pageant is still broadcast statewide, last I remember KHOU-Houston was carrying the show. But what does one expect from a state that still has the Kilgore Rangerettes perform at the state capitol every session!

Isn't the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageant taped for broadcast, instead of show live? The Miss America pageant could/should adopt this and tape the show on a Saturday for rebroadcast later.

USA Today did a feature piece on the Miss America Organization's current woes today: http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2005-06-19-miss-america_x.htm

The date for this year's pagent hasn't been set yet, and Boardwalk Hall has yet to have the two week block of dates booked.

A couple of telling facts:

--- ABC dropped the pagent like a hot potato due to record low ratings last year.

--- $5.6 million of the Miss America Organization's $6.9 million in revenue came from ABC, per it's IRS paperwork.

Sharply different ideas for revamping the pagent have been reportedly discussed, including airing it over a period of several nights with viewers getting to know the contestants per American Idol, and making it more into a reality show...with all that it means.

Sounds like it has some real problems.
______________

A PLOT FOR MISS CONGENIALITY ???

Sounds like the plot line to Miss Congeniality.
Perhaps, someone can hire Candace Bergin and she can blow up the whole production.....
Just kidding of course.
But Miss America Pagent is outdated and should have gone off the air a generation ago.
Since southern girls are now allowed to learn to read there is really now need for Mary-Sue-Beth to leave her trailer park to enter.

Hire Simon Cowell ("You are an absolutely dreadful contestant"), Randy Jackson ("Dawg, you are Da Bomb!"), and Paula Abdul ("You all deserve to be Miss America. I wish we could cut-up the crown into 51 equal pieces and give them to each of you") as judges, Ryan Seacrest ("One of these two young women will be named Miss America 2006......after the break!") as host, and one of the "Idol" winners to sing "There She Is, Miss America...".

;)

CentralFLEagle quoted a U.S.A. Today article:

> The date for this year's pagent hasn't been set yet, and
> Boardwalk Hall has yet to have the two week block of dates
> booked.

There actually is a reason why the Miss America pageant has traditionally been held a week or two after Labor Day. The pageant's scheduling was an attempt to stretch Atlantic City's tourist season (in the pre-casinos era) by a week or two past the traditional "end of the Summer tourist season" on Labor Day,

If my memory serves me correct, I can only remember one occassion when the Miss America pageant was not held in September. I think the pageant in 2001 was held in early October, but I believe the reason for that was that the original date would have been September 15th. With the September 11th terrorist attacks, the pageant (IIRC) was pushed back to the first available date for Boardwalk Hall, which was early October.

Better yet, hire Carson Cressley and his (BLEEP) Eye crew. At least we would get some laughs out of it. ;-)
