No change in October PPM

Another month, no change. Top stations 25-54 are KJAQ, KJR-FM, KPLZ and KRWM. The rest of the market is quite a bit farther back. Mornings go to KJAQ, KPLZ and KJR-FM.
Women 25-54 are owned by KRWM and KPLZ. Men by KJAQ and KISW. 18-34 mornings are a toss up between KBKS and KWFF. KWFF wins in women with a 12 share 18-34.

Arbitron promised consistent numbers. Seems pretty much the same each month with an occasional wobble.I wonder how KRWM will do with Christmas music this year and if other stations will join in?

Much less than expected. No on R-71 spent the most at around 200K for the market. Yes on R-71 and much of the candidate money went to Internet and TV.

Is it a sad testament to Seattle radio that mornings go to Jack FM? People don't have any people to listen to here.

And what's your point?

I just listed the top stations in no particular order. in reality Seattle listeners are going for live and local. Best thing to do in mornings is look at a six book average to date. Seattle has a great deal to listen to. The number one station in morning drive 12+ on a six book average is KOMO-AM, followed by KUOW. The number one station 25-54 in mornings is KPLZ, in women 25-54 its KPLZ and KRWM and in men its KJAQ, KISW and KZOK. 18-34 its KBKS and KWFF.

To me that says a lot about live and local morning shows. Mid-days, nights, weekends it is probably more about the music though a lot of live shows do very well like KISW's afternoon show, KPLZ's and KRWM's which are all in the top group.

In overall ratings virtually automated stations like KJAQ, KJR-FM and KRWM do very well, but so do KPLZ and KZOK. However, mornings in Seattle certainly belong to the live and local shows and a quick look at six months of the PPM proves that point. I can tell you from a sales perspective you can get more dollars if you station has good talent. End of story.

So true. Whats interesting is that Seattle really doesn't have any syndicated shows on in the morning on the FM band. Corolla was out before PPM. So while im all for "Live and Local", we don't necessary know how a syndicated show would do in PPM.

On another note, The overall consistent numbers with PPM are a good sign!

How do the news/talk stations Fair? You mentioned KOMO mornings does well. How about KIRO-FM, is it still near the bottom? And KTTH, 710 ESPN (I like how that sounds), KVI, KJR AM, KPTK, and KKOL, how do their shows rate?

I recently changed positions at work (I'm not in the biz) and was surprised at how many radios were tuned to 97.3 KIRO-FM all day long.

Also my own pet peeve, the loss of Marty & Jodi... how long before we know the effects on KMTT's ratings?

Thanks.

DJ Dan, FYI, KJR-FM and KRWM are not virtually automated. Not any more than most stations in the market. KJR-FM is live from 5a-7p and KRWM is live from 6a-7p. I'm sure that's probably the case at KPLZ and KZOK. Don't know any station that has live jocks after 7p any more.

That is why I said virtually. I believe KJR-FM does not have a morning show and just plays music and that afternoons, nights and weekends are automated, unless that has changed recently. I did tune in this morning and heard just music and produced elements. I do realize mid-days are live, which is why I said virtually. KRWM I believe is a background AC. I know the morning show is live, but was not sure about the other shifts. Delilah does the most talking on the station from the limited time I have listened, but she is not doing a custom Seattle show. I will be honest when it comes to Soft AC it is difficult to tell if they are voicetracked or not, which is why I said virtual.

My point is there is much less personality and more music focus on KJAQ, KJR-FM and KRWM, when compared to KZOK, KPLZ, KMPS, KWFF. "virtual automation" is the term we use in our rep sales office to mean a station that is music emphasis primarily. When you are selling endorsements, live spots most clients are looking for foreground talent. I will tell you that is is much harder to sell stations like KJR-FM, KJAQ and KRWM. They have the ratings, but it is hard to get the top rate. Advertisers are aware which stations are "foreground" and which stations are "background." The first station I sold was Beautiful Music. Big ratings, but no one bought it because it did not deliver results.

In this thread my comment was the more pointing out that personality driven or news stations do pretty well when compared to the stations that emphasize just music with minimal personality. Better way to say it?

I know where you are coming from Dan and couldn't agree more. FYI Randy Lundquist is "live and local" in PM Drive at KJR-FM.

KiSs and Kube totally outbill KJR-FM in their own building. Of course advertisers get that Jack and Kjr-fm and Warm are just background music and no one was really listening to them closely. only a moron would buy ads on these stations. PPM is about exposure not listenership. There is a difference. People listen to the morning shows at KISs and Wolf and STar and KZOK and Kisw because they want to connect with real people in the mornings that relate, not liner jocks on warm and Kjr and no jocks on Jack. Advertisers know there message is lost on stations that just play music. Just saw the billing figures for the last month and the top station was Kiro-FM followed by KMPS, followed by KZOk, followed by KPLZ. What do these stations have in common. SOMETHING INTERESTING BESIDES THE MUSIC!!! Pretty damn funny that three of the top four billing stations in the market are not in the top ratings and the number 1 and two billing stations aren't even in the top ten. Hah!

Ahem, hey Twister.. I get the impression that few care about your high school radio sandbox station right now. Perhaps you may want to give the subject a rest.

Makes you believe that C89 could also go automated...

..oh WAIT, they almost are!!
Not true. Richard J. Dalton does a live morning program 6 to 8 am 5 days a week and there are live evening personalities (VOLUNTEERS) that host Mon-Fri from 8 pm to midnight or so and also some late night specialty shows on Friday/Saturday/Sunday. The station is also live on Sunday mornings during the gospel stuff ( 8 am to 2 pm ) and in the evening with that specialty program.

Yes, I'm kind of a C89.5 "P1" and btw, it's fall fund drive right now. I'm sure the students would love to receive your donation of support.
