No Cigar for Lite fm

As hard as they try... still no cigar for Lite FM.

They got their usual Christmas music bump, but could not win the overall chase for women. KLTY is number one 25-54 Women.

And nothing to look forward to but average numbers till next November.

You know, as much as people rant and rave about the mighty collapse of DFW radio (and rightfully so), there is this itty-bity radio station that happens to be the #1 prototype in its market... in the country. KLTY is a powerhouse for soccer mom radio. And quite honestly, they do it right. Listeners are engaged with talk and music, stop-sets are marathons and always accepting feedback.

LITE should get their puff on up the dial and figure it out.

I am Christian, yet I just can't handle Christian radio. The songs are always the same..........at least they are to me.

I do like a variety in the subject matter of my songs.

Yes, as a Christian, I love God, God is great, Jesus is Holy, etc.....but I just can't handle listening to it all the time on the radio. :(

I am with you, brother. Also worked in national Christian formats too. Was even that "C" word for a few (consultant...shhh!) ;)

There is a reason this is soccer mom radio... it's noise filler. Not a lot of people are really listening for the same reasons you mentioned, and I agree with. However, this is quiet music that can fill the space in-between school trips, and I know MY KIDS won't get mental pictures of sex, drugs and rock n' roll while I drive to Mickey D's.

However, what they do in-between music is right on with what radio should be doing to involve the listener. Cheesy, yes. Standard, yes.

I agree with you - to a point. I am not ashamed of the name "Jesus Christ", nor will he be of me at the judgement. Hearing His name in songs will never bother me, we need more of Him. But when Christian radio feels like it has to tone down the tempo of the songs, and every song has to be "preachy" - or some chruch board of directors somewhere will clamp down because the station is too much fun or plays too much Hot-AC / Christian rock, then I have an issue with Christian radio.

Unfortunately, when they program soft preachy songs to "soccer moms", I can't stomach KLTY. There are some song so lame I think I am listening to an overdose of radio sugar. Fortunately, for aging rockers like me, there is Power FM 89.7, where the syrup-ey "take your Christian medicine" songs are never played.

And - most soccer moms I know, and I know quite a few, are more fun than KLTY's format. A whole lot of them are right over on Power FM whenever one of those slow plodding clunkers airs on KLTY. The ones I know are not doing knitting in home Bible studies in their spare time, they are vibrant, exciting human beings that like to rock and roll with their husbands. Not even 50 year old women I know seem to fit the stereotype of the knitting club - they actually have lives. Hire the babysitter, go out to (clean) parties and activities with their husbands or a group of ladies. KLTY may have a monopoly on CCM here, but I guarantee if they had serious competition like a WAY-FM outlet, they would be in trouble.

So far - nobody has been brave enough to take them on. Why? I don't know, maybe people don't know the format, maybe they think another tired, boring country station will rate higher. But if somebody was serious about doing Hot-AC Christian, I think there is a big hole between KLTY and Power-FM and somebody who really knows Christian music could do very well filling it. At least rate better than the lame attempts a new format around here like "Casa" or "Lite" or "Movin'". Barely get a play on my radio, always with wierd songs I could care less about.

By the way - Lite is picking up a few songs off of KLTY's playlist. But it is the slow ones. "I Can Only Imagine" - stuff like that. "Lite" is musically about where KCBI is. NOT a hole there to fill. Christian listeners - if they want to stick with that tempo of music, might as well stay on KCBI, KVTT, or KLTY. So many choices for slow Christian music. So few for hotter Christian music.

Brucie,

You've got a hole in your head if you think Soccer Moms are listening to POWER. :D Maybe a FEW headbanging hippie Mom types who thinks she can do ANYTHING she wants and is FORGIVEN just because she Believes in Jesus.

I personally know quite a few. But - we Fellowship Church members are used to more creative, more upbeat music - even on Sunday. Most 30 to 40 something women I know in that church are a lot more "fun" than KLTY and would rather listen to Power FM or something secular than KLTY. Which is a big problem for KLTY, because as churches migrate towards more creative, more upbeat music so will their beloved soccer mom demographic. To be honest, I don't know hardly anybody who listens to KLTY. They all listen to Power FM or something secular, females included. KLUV is big with the older ladies. A few admit to being Radio Disney listeners. A lot listen to 106.1 or 104.5 as guilty pleasures - but are quick to qualify that they switch the station when something repulsive comes on. There are some who listen to country. Almost no KLTY, KCBI, KVTT, etc.

KLTY must have an audience somewhere, but it probably isn't with Fellowship Church members.

...and so we are back to the cycle that makes KLTY the prototype for CCM anywhere and everywhere. Everyone warming a pew has a guilty pleasure for their tunage. From FBCers being tempted with KZPS to COGICs hypnotized with KKDA and KBFB to those from the Diocese listening to KLUV and KVIL, no one is faithful to one format... except soccer mom radio.

When going to pick up the kids, it's on the station du jour, but when the kids get in the warmed-up minivan, you really think KPWR is on? NO! Back to 94.9 we go. Everyone of these stations in questions, including WAY FM, I have been at and know the PDs well. Trust me on this, they are all similar with its approach but somehow gets a different segment of the church to populate its phone lines.

Maybe some of our cracked consultants in this business needs to attend churches to get us all on the same page? :-\

Does the fact that KLTY does so well, especiall with adult women, tell you anything.
Heck yes! It is saying as loud as one could scream that there are a great deal of people who are sick and tired of stations that are disregarding FAMILIES.

An example: A few days ago I'm in the car with my kids and the guy on KISS at 5 o'clock in the afternoon is doing break after break on the topic of "do your parents still do it"..."ever catch 'em"..."how often"...etc etc....callers are on discussing said-same. On LIVE FM one would expect that. On a mainstream CHR station at that time of day, probably not well advised. Think of it, kids, parents, after school, after sports practise and everything else tuning in....not a very smart timing! I am confident most parents in the car with kids did the same thing I did - TURNED IT OFF.

KLTY doing well is a prime example that people have had enough of this stuff. I'm an average parent and certainly no prude, but I'm not sitting in my car with my kids listening to that stuff. No, I won't be able to shield them from that kind of "adult talk" forever and I know it, but if I have a choice - I most certainly will make it, and it is clear many others are doing so as well. This is one of the reasons I like the KPLX HD2 so much right now. No inappropriate talk.

Steve, you've really nailed it! I spend a lot of time in the car . . . listening to a number of different stations . . . but when the kids are with me, or when we have the radio on at home it is always tuned to KLTY. Their "family friendly" slogan is a key to their success!
